Fallout 3

*NOTE: 99% of this post is about Fallout 3. If you plan to play the game and you don't want mini-spoilers, do not read! If you're curious at all, feel free to read.*

So I borrowed Fallout 3 from Ricky. When he brought it over, we played (I played) for a bit, like, an hour or two, while Alan watched and Duy fell asleep. So that one or two hours was the time spent in the vault, and the time getting out of the vault. I got to Megaton city and then stopped playing. After that, Ricky would come over sometimes (for Summerlicious, etc) but I haven't played more.

Fast forward to today, and I'm about 12-18 hours in (I forget at the moment, let's round to 15). Right now, I just went to the Museum of Technology to get the Dish, and now I'm at the Washington Monument where I'm about to put the dish in so that Three Dog can broadcast his radio station all over the country again.

Anyway, I didn't write this entry just to say how far I am. Back in Megaton, Mr. Burke gave me a device to blow up the city, and I didn't want to blow up the city, but I told him I'd do it anyway. After I had the device in my hand, I brought it to Lucas Simm's, the Sherriff of Megaton, who started to get really mad at Mr Burke, so he went to confront him.

I followed, and Lucas Simm's put Mr. Burke under arrest, and as they walk out of the bar, Mr. Burke pulls out a gun and kills the Sherriff. So, I took the law into my own hands and killed Mr. Burke.

Now there's two dead guys in the middle of this bar. I searched Mr Burke's body and I took all his possessions. I searched the Sheriff's body, but he's my friend, so I left him his hat and his jacket, but I took his gun (Chinese Assault Rifle, sounds spiffy) and ammo. At the time, everyone in the bar just continued to go along their business. I don't think they realized their Sheriff was dead.

Outside, nobody knew either, until maybe 10 hours later when I talked to Leo Stahl and asked him "who's in charge in this town?" And he said it used to be the Sheriff. Anyway, shortly after Lucas Simm's (the Sheriff) died, I found his house, entered it, and since nobody was using it, I pretended it was my house.

I opened one of the lockers and put some stuff in that I was carrying, that I didn't want to sell, but didn't want to carry. The most notable of which was a miniature nuclear weapon, as well as 7 mini-nukes to use with it. Yes, there are now nuclear weapons inside a dead man's home.

One day, I go out and I kill some mutant guys, and then I checked their living quarters and they had bags full of mutilated body parts, so like I do with all items, I took them. They weren't worth any money and I don't like randomly dropping stuff, so I went back to Megaton to "my house". For some reason I didn't notice last time, but there was a boy in the house. It was Lucas's son. How awkward. The Sheriff died, and now I'm using this little kid's house to store nuclear weapons. Anyway, so I go to the kitchen table and drop a pair of mutilated legs, a pair of mutilated arms, and a few other sickening body parts there. So now there's this house, with a little boy, with nuclear weapons and random body parts in his house.

Paints quite a picture, eh?

And there's this other quest I wanted to mention... I was supposed to hand-deliver a letter to a girl's family, and when I get to the other town, the girl's family had died, except for one boy, who was actually kidnapped by the bad guys. Well, he wasn't really kidnapped, but for the sake of keeping this blog entry shorter, I'll just say he was kidnapped. Anyway, I get him back, and now he's all happy because his sister wrote to him.

So I get back to the sister and for some reason my text choices don't include anything about "uhh... the rest of your family is dead." So now she's living happily in Megaton without knowing that the rest of her family is pretty much dead. So... yes.

That's what I wanted to say about Fallout 3. Overall I'm enjoying it a lot. I can see myself spending a lot of time with this game. Actually, I have another paragraph of random verbiage I want to say about Fallout 3... like, a grabbag of mixed thoughts and ideas.

Unlike stores in most RPG's, "stores" in Fallout 3 do not have infinite money! They are stores, so they probably make money each day, but they do actually have finite money so you can't always get rid of stuff for money. They also don't have infinite inventory, which really sucks when you run out of ammo for your favourite gun! That's... interesting. Well, now I have a house to store stuff in at least :P So when the stores get more money, I can just go into my house, grab random junk and then sell it off.

So... yeah, overall I'm enjoying Fallout 3 a lot. It's weird, that I couldn't get into Oblivion though. I think in traditional (J?)RPGs, you play the game because it is story driven. In Fallout 3, it's pretty open-ended so you kinda weave your own story, so it's more character driven and setting-driven. In other words, I guess I didn't care at all about my character in Oblivion, but the setting and character in Fallout 3 is much more enticing to me. It's especially neat how the game starts me out as a little baby, so I kinda grow as that character too.

And... that's it!

Imma gonna play more Fallout 3 now. Tonight Jia comes back, tomorrow is WinMagic BBQ, and Sunday is Isaque's wedding. Bye!
