Meh, Fail, Win, N/A or meh, N/A, Win

Lots to talk about! Primarily, skiing/boarding/blading trip, and Raptors game.

So, last Friday, after Vinh's exam, Vinh was off for the weekend and the next 4 days (so today is Thursday, he has school again on Friday), so our family decided to take a vacation to a lodge and do some skiing. We have the lodge for Friday night, Saturday night, and Sunday night. That brings us to...

Meh

As Ambrose can witness to, we did not spend Friday night at the lodge. We stayed at home! So, I consider this a meh point. Ambrose came over, we had some 4 player Rockband, and some Devil May Cry demo, but we didn't go to the lodge, so that part of the vacation was pretty meh-like. We were however able to borrow snow pants from a friend, so that's good. That brings us to...

Fail

Saturday was an epic fail. First, the plan was to leave the house at 9:00, but I know my family, I knew we weren't going to leave until at least 10:00. Turns out we leave at 11:00. So, on to the lodge, right? Nope, not yet. First we head to some De Boers furniture sale, and then we went to an outlet mall, didn't buy much. We went to Harvey's/Wendy's for lunch in Barrie, but the Wendy's was closed for 2 months for renovations, so we all ate at Harvey's, where there was this weird dude working there who kept talking to Jon and Mai. He goes on about how he owns a Ferrari and a Diablo, and his nickname is Elvis. He's really weird. We were glad to leave that Harveys.

Then we finally get to the lodge, and so far so good. It's a nice looking lodge. Anyway, we spent some time watching old episodes of American Gladiator on a lesser TV. Great, we go on vacation to watch old things on old tvs. Heh. Anyway, we did some tubing, which was sorta fun but really short and not worth the money. For dinner, we decided to go to... Casino Rama. So we get there, and Vinh can't get in at all, so we just leave. They say there's a restaurant at the hotel, but it's probably not special so we leave the entire Casino area.

That's right. We went to Casino Rama for about 6 minutes and just leave. That's a totally epic fail. I wish we went to Fallsview, and then we can imitate the commercial and be like

"Man, this is boring. We're not doing anything at all. It's like... it's like...."
"Like that time at Fallsview Casino?"
"Yes. Exactly like that."

...

We end up at East Side Mario's. There was a leaky ceiling, so we moved over a bit and got two free appetizers. Turns out I still don't like blue curacao. We left the restaurant with five leftover boxes.

Played Balderdash, watched SNL Live, went to bed. I had 4 bad dreams that night! One dream, the pillow was like a keyboard and you had to solve quizzes while sleeping, which is stupid because you can't think while sleeping. I dreamt that the rest of us also had bad nights because we had to sleep on a keyboard and solve puzzles. In another dream a bunch of us were doing a magic draft of the new set, and in my dreams when there are magic drafts, the cards are usually oversized. The text on the cards were ridiculous and I didn't understand anything. After the first booster I had 50 cards in my pile and it was really hard to organize and understand all the cards.

I had two other bad dreams and if I wrote this entry a while ago I would've remembered, but well, I don't now! Darn. Oh well. Shorter paragraph for you, so maybe you win. Overall, Saturday... left the house late, offtopic furniture store, offtopic outlet mall, empty Casino trip, did a lot of nothing... Anyway, eventually I wake up, and that brings us to...

Win

Sunday was a winning day. We all went out in the morning for some Snowblading, and we did it for the whole day. Snowblading, or blading, are like skiis, but the skis are shorter and you have no poles, and the skis are a bit thicker. So in essence, it's kind of like skating on the snow. You still go downhill like the other sports. They say snowblading is the easiest, and boarding is the hardest, and yeah, that's right.

Here's two pictures of trees.

WOW. The mountain was beautiful. The snow was beautiful, the weather was wonderful... horseshoe valley is great. It's not crowded, and it's really nice. I highly recommend it. Also, I think my snowboarding experience wasn't really good... we got this free hill that didn't require a lift to practice on, and it's really small so you pretty much just go and then stop after 3 seconds of figuring out what to do. The snow was harder and there were some icy patches, so it was pretty bad.

Here's a picture comparing this bunny hill mountain to the practice hill we had with snowboarding. The blue one is the nice one.

But here... I love the whole experience. Well, after renting the equipment and putting the boots on, it was smooth sailing. Putting on the blades and taking them off was a snap. Lining up was a double queue, which is actually "more fun" than a single queue. Then you get on the ski lift up to the bunny hill, and wow, that's a really nice ride. It lets you sit down too, so it's a good resting spot. And then you get to the top of the hill, and you have a fun time going down, and lining up again. I actually really like each and every part of the whole thing. Compared to snowboarding (go down the hill, fall down, take off board, walk up the hill, put on board, and stand up, and repeat), this was much more relaxing and enjoyable.

So, at first, I fell a lot, but after 3 or 4 tries I got the hang of it and didn't fall, and I went faster and was able to turn and stop and all that. Duy had some more trouble, Vinh actually did pretty well, Sis and Jon were pretty good overall. So after 4 or 5 times, I pretty much mastered the bunny hill, but I liked it so much I kept going on it a dozen more times.

At the end of Sunday, my dad got us all to get on the bigger hill... and it was a disaster. I fell so many times, and each time I fell, I would spin over and over, it was a mess, but it was pretty crazy and we had a good laugh with it. Second time, I managed to stop a few times by spinning a full 180, but other times I would still fall and it was really funny. They call me Kamikaze Bao now.

Had good food for lunch, and had leftovers on Sunday night. We also had the lodge for Sunday night, but we went home on Sunday cuz my dad had work to go to on Monday. So technically, we could've still been at the ski lodge for Monday, so Monday might be a meh, or maybe an n/a kind of day since nothing special happened. I woke up all sore and achy though, heh.

Here is a picture from an icicle Sunday night.

Also, here's 3 minutes of video we took. I don't have time to edit it now or add music to it, so enjoy

Tuesday was a regular day. That brings us to...

Win

Wednesday night, we went to a Raptors basketball game. Me (first time), Duy (first time), Mai, Jon, Dan (from WinMagic), Paolo (from WM), Laleh (formerly from WM), Kevin Pille (from WM), and Kevin Le (from WM). Raptors vs the Wizards. And wow, what a game! It was my first time to a raptor's game, and it was excellent! First of all... well, some of this is riddled with spoilers about the game, if you've watched it or you don't care, read on!

First of all... wow, Raptors did awesome! 122 - 83, won by 39 points, tied for best victory ever (tied with 112 - 73 against Atlanta or something a while ago), that's awesome. Secondly, there's all this fandom... everyone's a fan, and it's a home game thingy so all the things the raptors do at home is awesome. I've never been to a basketball game before, so it was all kinda surprisingly cool. It also helps to go with a lot of fans that go crazy when they drink, hehe.

So first of all, they told us the starting line-ups of the Wizards, and then it was the raptors turn... the stadium went all dark, and they had a lightshow and the announcer's going all crazy and the crowd's going all crazy, and it was all really full of fandom. The cheerleaders come out and dance, and everytime there's a timeout, the cheerleaders come out and dance again, and the crazy raptor mascot and the other crazy raptor baloonish mascot... wow, that's awesome.

So first, the raptors are leading 12-0, and Dan's yelling "tonight's a shutout!"
At half time, the raptors are winning 61-41, and I'm telling myself, that Pizza slice is mine (because if the raptors score at least 100 points, PizzaPizza gives us a free slice of pizza)...
At 98 points, everyone stopped yelling "defense" or clapping, instead everyone was saying "Pizza! Pizza! Pizza! Pizza!" - it was awesome.

Masio (sp?) played and got a bunch of fouls. I don't really know the significance of that, but Dan was really surprised. And then the raptors won, it was great. I met up with Laleh (former coworker) again, and I saw Jeff Tran there (from UWVSA, you guys probably remember him), it was cool.

So overall, that was pretty awesome. And that brings us to

End
