Digital Seinfeld Effects

Seinfeld

Okay, first, everyone knows who Jerry Seinfeld is, right? o_O ... anyway, during my Bao-post, I did say that I was going to post a snippet of some Seinfeld thing I had. To clarify, one day many months ago, Jia brought his computer over and I leeched a bunch of files from him; anime, different anime, pictures, and music clips, one of which was a 72-minute recording of one of Jerry Seinfeld's standup-comedy routines, titled "I'm Telling you for the last time". So, I've listened to it, and now here's a 6-7 minute snippet of it. I'll probably post 1 or 2 more clips, but first there's this one. It's about the supermarket and milk. I think we all can relate to supermarkets and milk, so this should be a good listen.

Enjoy! (oh, and let me know if you do click on the link or not, not that it will slow me down in posting links either way) http://www.baomon.com/blog/jerry_milk.mp3

Effects

I haven't been playing Mass Effect lately... I know, you can play it for 10-20 minutes at a time, but I feel like I'm not getting the whole 'effect' if I don't sit down and play it for an hour or more at a time. Using an analogy, it's like having a friend... suppose you have a friend that you hang out with 5 minutes a day, and you hang out with him/her for 5 years... that's a total of about 150 hours. However, each time you're with that friend you're just hanging out for a couple minutes. Now compare that with a friend who you see for many hours a day, a few days a week. That time you spend with that person is much more meaningful than 5 minutes a day.

So similarly, if that makes any sense, I could progress in the game playing 20-minute sessions, once before work, once before dinner, and once after dinner, but it just doesn't feel right. It feels better being able to hang out with Fightmasta Shephard and my crew of alien girl assassin and human soldier female, for a few hours together.

I played a bit this morning, it was fun, I miss it.

Digital

The other day Wen and I were discussing gifts that we can buy at Futureshop for older women (like moms) and we decided that Futureshop sucks for that (and so it should be, in my opinion). But in the discussion, the object of Digital Picture Frames came up. And long story short, in some sort of impulse-buy process... I bought a digital frame. Not the best price, but it's okay, and now it has shipped and I have it with me.

So, I have an 11 inch picture frame, with 256mb of memory, capable of playing mp3 and avi video too. It looks kinda nice, would probably make a good gift. Now the question is... for whom?

Right now in my mind, there are three choices - my mom; my sister; and myself. I probably should've thought of this before I bought it, but as I said, it was an impulse buy. And in my mind I thought it would be a good present for my mom, but... read on.

Are you the type that hates lights on in the house (when nobody's in the room)? And computer monitors being on all night long when nobody's there? If so, you probably wouldn't want a digital picture frame that's on all the time, burning pixels unnecessarily bright at you. I assume that's what a digital picture frame does... so I'm not sure a digipiframe is the best gift for her. A picture frame, sure... the convenience of the digipiframe is pretty cool. But for a frame to just sit there and display a picture whilst using up electricity? Not so good.

The video capabilities could be neat, and the mp3 playability is also a nice feature. But the 'being on all the time' thing probably wouldn't be great for my mom.

As for my sister... well, digipiframes would probably be an old people thing, yes? I think it would be a neat gift for my sister... pictures of cats rotating, maybe some neat music and some neat small videos playing by her computer or wherever... I think it would be a good thing for her to have. As for a present though... it seems kind of bland. Like, an ipod is cool, hip gift - a picture frame, albeit digital, is a picture frame which... well, it's a pretty thoughtless present. Or, I mean, it feels really boring as a gift.

So eventually, the ownership may go to my sister, but it doesn't scream "WOW" like a cool hip Christmas present. So the last possible recipient, at the moment... is me!

Do I want it? 256mb, so maybe 10 songs, 3 videos, and 40+pictures, would be great. I'll put it on my desk, or sometimes my room, and... well, I think it would be neat. Not the most practical thing, but it'll be neat, to say the least. But the next question is...

If it's for me, should I open it now, and have it on display for the WinMagic Christmas party? :P

It's a pretty petty thing, heh... hm, whatever. I won't open it yet, but it'd be cool. Now the other question is... if it's a present for someone else, do I give it to them in the box that it's in, or do I take it out and have it all customized and filled with favourite pictures and songs already? The latter probably sounds better in my opinion, so I'll do that, if it comes to that.
