It's like, ummmmm, damn, sir.

So this update is about Alan. Let's see... in no particular order...
.
Alan is a creature of habit. Each time we went to... uhh... whatever Bubble Tease was before that... uhh... he would order #24, I think it was, the baked spaghetti. EVERYTIME. There are a billion things on the menu, but he always went back to that - not that he tried other things and likes baked spaghetti the best, he just only eats that. We went to Red Lobster a few times, and it's always the same thing too And before in a comment, he said that he doesn't try new things if it takes too much effort or if the risk vs reward isn't a good ratio, although I don't think that has much to do with Red Lobster.

Alan sucks at Rhythm games. One time at the arcade in Waterloo, I let him try the drum game on my last life (so he wouldn't waste a whole dollar if he was bad), and I gave him what I thought was the easiest song... and... well, he failed after 10 seconds. The notes came down the screen and he didn't hit any of them... yyyeahh...

Alan talks in that... umm... voice. It's unlike all the other voices and tones I know... I admit, I do it too sometimes, mainly when he's around, or sometimes when I'm feeling particularly lazy, because I've been living with Alan for a while. It's all sorta monotone and declining, which is pretty weird, but maybe it is due to Alan's nature...

I think of Alan as a "follows the flow" kind of guy. He doesn't seem very opinionated, and he avoids conflict, and he just... well, seems to go with the flow. When Alan started playing WOW, at first, from my perspective, it looked like he was just doing it because Duy and Jason and everyone else was doing it. From my perspective, Alan was the "weak" one in the group, that is, he's less hardcore, and his pet kept aggroing mobs, and it felt like he didn't know how to play the game as well as Duy and Ray and them.

This made it feel to me as if he's not as interested in WOW as the other guys, which, if you follow the slippery slope, meant he was just tagging along for the ride. I think if he wasn't pressured into playing WOW, he wouldn't do it as much.

Alan goes to fellowship and church, but I'm not sure about his leadership position at fellowship. I think he says that he does lead some workshops, but I haven't seen any of it, so it's hard to tell. I'm just imagining Alan talking in his voice, which isn't a very attention-demanding voice. It's all sorta monotone and declining, so I'm not sure how well it works as a leader, but whatever, I don't know.

Alan's parents still restrict him... that's probably something we can all agree on. The "fact"/"problem" might lie in the hands of Alan's parents... or it might be that Alan is still going with the flow, and he does not care much for change. I mean, he might not be fighting for change, he does not stand up for himself. His parents are still running his life and they restrict him, and they don't trust him enough for him to make his own decisions.

So... Alan is timid and shy? If he doesn't have an attention-demanding voice, if he doesn't seek attention, if he doesn't like conflict... I would say he is shy. His voice is also very timid and shy... it talks in such a way that the audience hears him, but not a lot of emotion is conveyed, so that there is no... miscommunication at the other end. Like, if I suggested something nicely to David, but then he interprets my tone of voice as harsh, he will interpret my message as such, and he will attack back. If Alan said it, it would all be monotone, lack of emotion, and what David hears will be as if Alan wrote it in a book... no emotions stuck in between the words.

Until Alan got the bank job, I would've still said Alan was very much just 'going with the flow'. Going to classes, tutorials, etc, all that going with the flow, kinda like what it should be; after university, he was doing nothing for a while, because that's what happens when you don't start anything. Then he got the tutoring job, which as well all believe, isn't a real job. It seems like he was just going with the flow again. But now he has a job at a bank, which is pretty cool, and he's no longer just going with the flow. So that's good.

Wow, this entry was much harder to write than Ray's entry... also confusing to more read. As Alan's tone, his character is also kinda non-descript, hiding in the background. Ray's character was easy to write about, heh - but Alan, he just drifts here and there. Also, I guess Ray's and David's were for fun, but it's almost like a responsibility that I'm writing Alan's biography, hehe. But I'll continue to try if necessary.

That is my criticism of Alan. Oh wait, am I also supposed to guess tastes? Of course... umm...

Umm... he likes what we like, but also, like his upbringing and his tone, I don't think he likes things of evil extremes. That is, regular movies are just fine, but if something is too violent (Elfen Lied, maybe Kill Bill) or too sexual (something?) or too crazy wacky ugly animationy (I dunno, bobobo or FLCL? just examples), then it strays too far away from middle-territory, so he won't like it.

However, he doesn't like conflict, so his default reaction to any visual show is "it was interesting". If he liked something or didn't like something, he'd hide it in a barrier called "interesting", in which none of us would get any information. And usually he would end up saying "I liked it" to agree with us.

For example, if we watched Elfen Lied, which I liked, and then I asked Alan if he liked it or not, well, he can't say "Bao, that was horrible, I hated it" because he's afraid of conflict. Instead he'll just say "It was interesting", and more often than not, if we ask him to clarify, and we ask him "did you like it?" he would say "I liked it."

So... he would lie, I think. And then it'll be awkward, cuz sometimes, for example, I'll tell some other guy "this show is good, Alan liked it, right?" And Alan would say "no", so I get these wrong impre... wait a minute. Maybe that wasn't Alan, maybe that was Vinh. It might've been Alan too, but mostly Vinh. At the time right after watching or experiencing something, he would say he really enjoyed it, and later on he might not like it or downright dislike or hate it.

So that was Vinh, I think. Anyway, so that's Alan. So what would Alan say to this? I'm not really sure. My critique isn't very... insightful, or it was also pretty neutral, or also kind of empty... it made it sound like Alan is an empty person, which he might want to take offense to. Also, uninteresting. It's like, in his own words, everything around him is "interesting" except himself. So he should write something back... or will he go with the flow? Will other people write back first? Will David try to change something about what I think about Alan? Hmm.... If so, he will thank you.

Ahah! You thought the blog post was over, but I just thought of some more stuff, but I didn't want to scroll up and randomly break up a paragraph, so I'm continuing to write down here. So Alan is a creature of habit and he goes with the flow. Alan has catchphrases. "sir", "I will thank you", "it's like hmmm... damn", and "oh no sir" are just a few. He would say things, and back in Waterloo we would sometimes make fun of him. He's kinda funny in that way... so we make fun of him, and he laughs with us, going with the flow... I guess that's okay... ... hmm, I forget what my point was. I will thank you.
