Mundane update, games games and contest
So… I haven’t written a new blog post for a while, since nothing of interest has happened for a while. But I should blog, so I’ll update you on what I’ve been doing, although it’s rather mundane.
I haven’t played Guitar Hero II as much lately… although, in terms of console games, then yeah, I’ve played mostly Guitar Hero II (after checking out Worms, Alien Hominid, and TMNT: The Arcade Game). I think I’m getting pretty good at GH2 (just being modest, heh). I think I can now do most Hard Mode songs without using Star Power (incl. Freebird, Hangar 18, etc), and I can do all Level 7 songs on Expert without Star Power. After so much playing of certain songs, I’d have to say Carry Me Home and Psychobilly Freakout are easier than Madhouse and Laid to Rest, at least, without star power.
I got a new device a few weeks ago that let’s me record stuff. It works pretty well, except it makes the screen size really small, and thus, makes it hard to play games while recording. But I’ll manage. Also, it spits out mp4 files, which I’m having trouble editing… anyone know of a good, free, mp4 converter?
Let’s see… what else… Heroes is taking a break… I still watch 24 and Lost… oh, I’m about half way through Mushishi now (anime), it’s pretty good. It’s kinda peaceful and a bit episodic, but it feels nice and natural. Like peaceful nature with a bit of creepy nature.
Oh, I’ve started working on a new flash game. It’ll be a platformer, like Mario, and it’ll be based on a webcomic character named Beartato. Long story short, a dude named Anthony Clark, under the alias nedroid, draws pictures and comics and things, one of which is the ever-popular Beartato, who is a mix between a bear and a potato. One day Anthony photoshops some mock pictures of what a Beartato game would look like. I decided to take those pictures, and actually make a flash game about it.
So now I’m popular on nedroid, and now there’s talks of making full fledged games, so now I’m working on this game.
Anyway, in optimizing that game, I found a neat little trick to make it much faster, so I tried to apply it to my own Zelda game. Unfortunately, the trick doesn’t work so well – it’s still faster, but not much faster, but I guess you can say I opened Pandora’s box, cuz now I’m tinkering with my Zelda game once again.
And now I optimized a few more things, and it’s much faster now, to the point where I’m proud of the changes I made. I’m trying it on my work-computer, so it’s a bit slow, so I know what you guys are going through when you try my game. So it’s good to make this game on this computer. Also, I’m taking some of the comments I’ve read (Wen’s, David’s) and trying to apply them too.
I’ll probably release the new Zelda next blog update. It’s not only going to be faster, but it should be more fun as well. I just played it, I think it is faster and easier, but I can still edit it more. Also, I might add in a few graphics… at least, make the first level look all decorative, hehe. Oh, and once again, the giant enemy crab has managed to kill me again…. But that’s because I forgot to respec my skill points..
Anyway, any other improvements you’d like for the Zelda game? Specifically, something players can notice in the first 5 minutes of the game? Also, suggestions for music, sound effects, graphics, etc would be pretty too =) … anyway, expect next update to be mostly about the Zelda game! Ciao!
::EDIT::! Interior Design Contest!
Okay, I have just invented a contest, involving my Zelda game. One way to make the game better is by adding/changing the graphics, so this is what this contest is about. Let's look at this one scene from the first level:

This is one room in the forest temple. It doesn't even look like a room; just a collection of walls placed around so you can't get through. Some of the walls aren't even touching each other. The walls have a gradient, but it still ain't pretty. There isn't even a floor! The floor is just grass, the same grass which is outside the level. Additionally, our main character is just a blue box. I admit, I've gotten to love the blue box and its red signal eyes, but... it's not working out anymore.
So, this has gotta change. So, this is an interior design contest/project. First, put some newspapers on the floor, and throw some white paint on the walls. Also, let's skin our main character (skin as in skinning winamp, not skinning a wolf). So now we have:

So, this is your empty canvas. The contest, is to best decorate this place, so that it fits into the game. It's the forest temple, the first level in the game - it takes maybe 5 minutes to complete, but maybe you'll come back here later... so maybe you'll spend more than 5 minutes here.
It's a forest temple, so maybe it can have brick walls and torches, but it's not really a castle - no king lives here. The ground can be bricks, pebbles, rock, marble, whatever you want, although it should stick to the theme.
You can use flash, photoshop, or whatever you like to edit the picture. If you have suggestions for other parts of the temple, also let me know that.
The winner might have their entry entered into the game, mayperhaps into this very forest temple. I'll take all other considerations as well for other temples and whatever else.
And that's it! GLHF! ::/end edit::
::edit 2:: - also, for bonus points, submit a piece of music that would go with your level design!Labels: beartato, contest, flash, guitar hero, zelda
