David doesn't know how to watch Tennis... just kidding

Nope, not my game update yet. Nobody has submitted any entries to my contest yet – not even me! I’ve been busy, working on two different games at once (this one and the new Beartato game) – also, I’m busy having fun too, hehe. First, let’s talk about random game shows…

So over the past little while there’s been a few new game shows. There’s Identity (hosted by Penn?), Show me the Money (William Shatner), 1 vs. 100 (Bob Saget)… but then there’s “Are you smarter than a 5th grader?”, which I didn’t like at first but it’s surprisingly funny how unintelligent the contestants are. Long story short, contestants have to answer questions from grade 1 to grade 5 textbooks. My favourite question:

“If Y = 3X, and 3X = 12, what is Y?”

The woman had no idea, so instead of risking her $50,000 to go for $100,000, she took the $50,000 and walked away. Also there was this woman with $300K, and she was asked a grade 1 geography question: “Which continent is also the name of a country?” And she got really confused, so she walked away.

Anyway, Wen and I were talking today about these game shows, and he asked “why don’t they have any new fast-paced game shows like Jeopardy anymore”? And I said it was a good question, one which might end up being an essay or a blog entry in the future. He looks forward to reading it when I write it.

I forgot to mention last update that I’m about 90 minutes through Final Fantasy VI Advance for the GBA. It was a great game back then, and it’s still a great game today. There were a lot of things I don’t remember, so it’s sorta a new adventure for me, all over again. Not quite, but kinda.

Oh yeah, Duy came back this weekend, and he played my game! Well, I started for him, but then I let him take over and he finished it! Finally, someone has beat my enemy crab, my enemy lizardthing, and my enemy wolf, and seen my ending. Sweet! Now I can grow complacent and not work on it anymore, hehe… but I still want to work on it, make it prettier and stuff.

(on a totally random note, last Sunday’s Simpsons was pretty good, compared to other Simpson’s as of late; same with the last Lost, ‘twas good)

Wii Would Like To Play

So, the other day my sister wanted to play Warioware, but instead we decided to try out Wii Play. It is surprisingly fun, compared to the reviews I’ve heard about it. There are 9 games, and my favourites are Tanks and Find Mii.

Some of the other games are oookay. There’s one where you shoot targets, which is good for the wii controls and it works well enough and is fun for a bit, but it’s nothing spectacular. Table tennis and Pose Mii aren’t exciting either. Billiards and fishing aren’t really fun either, and something was wrong with the 2nd wiimote so it couldn’t play those games properly.

There’s an air hockey game which looks spiffy and fun, but there’s a slight intuitive flaw.. it’s a 2d topview horizontal game, and if you’re on the right side you try to hit the puck to the left; so you’re right handed, and you hit to the left, which is good, because it’s like a forehand smash in tennis. But if you’re on the left, and you’re right handed, your action is a backhand smash, which just feels wrong. And in 1-player mode… well, you’re on the left. Next, there’s a game where you ride a cow, so you hold your wiimote in the Chauffeur position – but in addition to turning, you can jump, speed up, and slow down. Once again, the 2nd wiimote didn’t work for this game. This game is kinda fun and cool, but once again lacks pizzazz and longevity.

So I like Tanks and Find Mii. In Tanks, you control, um, tanks, and you try to destroy other tanks. You have a bird’s eye view of the playing field. Ideally you’d play with with the wiimote and nunchuk, but there’s an option to play without the nunchuk (which is a good option, but it’s really hard). You use the stick on the nunchuk to move your tank and the wiimote to aim and fire or drop mines; if you just have the wiimote, you use its control pad to move.

The game’s fun – there’s not much else to say. It’s not very fast paced so it’s pretty calm, and it’s pretty challenging. I can’t get past level 16 so far.. anyway, in single player you have a few lives, in co-op you lose when both of your tanks are dead. So I like Tanks, not sure if you’ll care for it.

And then there’s Find Mii. In two-player mode, you are competing against your friend in the different challenges – most points after 2 minutes wins. In one-player mode, you gain 10 seconds each time you beat a round, and the game’s over when you run out of time.

Each level has a task, like “Find 2 look-a-likes” – and in the next screen, you see a bunch of mii’s (the ones you made and a bunch of the game’s own mii’s), and you have to find and click on the two that are the same. Other challenges include finding the Mii that you are using, finding the miis that are sleeping, and so on. Sometimes the miis just stand there, sometimes they’re swimming or running around, and sometimes it’s dark so you’re using a flashlight.

When we play the one-player mode, I’m holding the wiimote, but all of us (me, my sister, maybe vinh) are helping find the people. It’s like a team game of “Where’s Waldo”. And I’m always a fan of games that use things that we make – in this case, we make the miis and this game uses them. So when we play, it’s like we’re playing with our friends, when we see Alan, Isaque, and David on screen! It’s fun!

So it might sound a bit boring, but we’re really liking Find Mii. It’s a nice family activity, and we’re always stumped when it takes so long to find 2 people that look alike… highest we’ve gotten is level 67. Hey, maybe later I can tape the game, and you guys can “compete” against us when you watch the video! But the screen will be pretty small for me…

Oh, in response to the post title… it’s just a joke, an observation I made during one Find Mii session. There’s a challenge where the miis are watching a game of tennis – so their heads are looking left and right as the ball moves left and right. Your objective is to find 2 or 3 guys who, when the rest of the audience looks left, they look right, and vice versa. I got that game 3 times that session, and all 3 times, David was there, and he was one of the “odd ones out”.
