Fred's Not Here and Steam Whistle Pics

Hello. I'm too tired to post an actual entry, but for now I'll post pictures from the Winterlicious meal at Fred's Not Here, followed by pictures from the Lunar Bash club event I went to, since David asked for some. Later I'll update this entry with more text.

As usual, click on the picture for a higher quality, higher resolution pic, and like last time, sometimes the thumbnail is zoomed in so the full picture may contain more stuff.

new feb14 - So this time, Alan, David, Ricky, Duy, and I went to my (and Ricky's, and Duy's) 3rd Winterlicious event, a $25 dinner at Fred's Not Here. Our original plan was to do two $15 lunches, but it got complicated so we ended with one dinner. Aww, I wanted to try some beer-infused food at BeerBistro... but anyway...

So the night started with some crazy ride mixups, but we left our house in our van at 7:05, and I thought we were going to be late - but the traffic and the weather were nice, and we parked in Toronto at 7:40, so we had time to spare. As you can see from the pictures below, Ricky had time to get a coffee at Tim Horton's.

Appetizers

I'll leave the pictures like that instead of placing words in between to describe each picture separately. So anyway, as usual, first was the bread. Wow. The long thin 'yellow' breads were very interesting. They had the consistency of tea biscuits, and... they were spicy! They were pretty spicy, with an odd taste... I really liked it. I wouldn't say I liked the taste thaaat much, but I liked the novelty. I think I had 1 and a half of those, which might explain why I eventually was full...

Anyway, Ricky had the grilled calamari, David and I had the baked lobster&crab soup, and Alan and Duy had the baked shrimp with melted blue cheese. You can see two pictures of the Calamari, and a few pics of the soup and one of the shrimp. The shrimp were smaller than I expected... but anyway, you can probably imagine shrimp and blue cheese, and that's what they got. The soup... it had a flaky pastry shell on top, and the soup was a sorta tomato-soup, with hints of crab or lobster or something. I expected more of a lobster bisque or clam-chowder type soup, with more real seafood chunks or whatever...

It was interesting though. I think David liked it... I was expecting more from the soup. It was interesting, but I'd have to give it a low score. So among the 5 of us, we got 3 different appetizers out of 7 choices, all seafood.

Entreeeees

WOW. This dude is awesomely big. I think the picture makes it look smaller than it actually is... does it? Anyway, this was a pretty big meal. This is the triple pork - sausage, ribs, and some suckling pig. I had a feeling it was going to be a big meal, but not this big.

On another note, most of the meals today had a regular price tag of $19.99, so we weren't saving thaat much. That said, it's feasible to go back to Fred's Not Here on a regular day and have this meal again.

These are the rest of the entrees. I took more pictures of the pork to see more angles. As you can see, Duy got some animal's hand and a biscuit. No, just kidding... that was the lemon thyme Veal strip bone-in steak with gorgonzola polenta cake, or something. Ricky and Alan got the famous chicken thai curry, and David had some mushroom ravioli dish with mushrooms and truffle cream.

I tried a bit of each meal, not too much though. The mushroom thing was ookay - it's hard to judge pastas for the finer qualities. The curry wasn't as hot as I expected - it actually was very mild. But the dish looked nice, and was decorated with a half coconut shell. Duy didn't like his meal. I didn't try the polenta cake..

As for mine, I shared pieces of ribs and sausage and suckling pig with the others, and at the end I couldn't finish it! I was pretty full already, and I didn't want to get much fuller because I was going to a party afterwards, so later I gave the rest to Duy. Anyway, the sausage was sausage... I didn't care much for it. The ribs were pretty good - they're supposed to be rubbed with Chipotle sauce (my favourite sauce at Subway), but I didn't taste it. The suckling pig was interesting - variety full, I guess, with pig, skin, and fat. There was a mango-ish sauce and some mashed potatoes and some greens on the side.

Overall, it was a good dish, and a pretty big dish too. So, out of 8 entrees, we tried 4.

Some pics of dessert.

Ricky and I got fresh fruit ice - not sure what it was, but turns out it was sorbet! And wow, it was the richest sorbet I have ever tasted... I think. WOW. I think I might actually want to go back to FNH on a regular day and have pork and sorbet (skip the soup). The sorbet was really rich and tasty. Once again though, I was full, so after eating most of the strawberry and mango, I gave up the rest.

Alan was curious about the bread pudding, so he tried that. I had a bite... it was ookay. Like a cake. Alan says it's just like bread and cream, so he gave some to David. It was David's first time having Creme Brulee, and he very much enjoyed it. Duy had the chocolate mousse cake... I think he liked it too. I had a cross-section of it, taking in all 3 layers... and... I felt it was... unprofessional? I dunno... the top layer is marshmallow - so when I tasted it, it tasted like a vivapuff! So I didn't really like it.

Some pics of the place.

Umm... looks nice. Check the pic with the lady holding the boombox... it's quite... odd. Anyway, the place was sorta dark, and the ceiling was lower than all the other fancy restaurants. You can see the kitchen at the end. And yeah, maybe I should take pictures of the waiters next time, just to capture the whole experience.

Here are pics from the Lunar Bash, a VSA club event held by Anna Do, just for the VSA's and their friends, at the Steam Whistle Brewing.

I didn't take as many pictures as I hoped to, but oh well. So anyway, after driving around, being lost and not knowing where to look, for a while, I finally got there, and I went in. I got there about 10:30, so I wasn't too late... but as we all know, parties don't really start until much later. So I got in, and it was pretty dead... maybe 30 people, nobody dancing, just hanging around, drinking beer, eating snacks. You can see a few people dancing by themselves in that one picture - that's how lame it was in the beginning.

So anyway, it is a brewery, kinda. I think the room we were in was designed as a clubbing room, but if you look through the windows, you can see the plant where they make the beer, with conveyor belts and everything. I bought a bottle of beer (Steam Whistle is all they had), I tried it, didn't really like it though.

Anyways, it was a private event for UVSA, hosted by my friend, Anna Do. That means, only people invited to the event were coming. It's not like the time I went with Alfie, where the 10 of us went to a club, but it was a regular clubbing night, so we were joined by 100 other strangers, dancing the night away. So it was a lot more private, so a lot less people, depending on how well the event was planned...

Fast forward to 11:30, when the sexy team of Thao, Michelle, Anna, and some other girl came. Haha... they looked pretty good. Michelle invited me, so I was wondering when she'd show up. So I guess the party started then, sorta, because more of my friends were there. I would dance a bit, but not too much.

It isn't until the Waterloo guys arrived at 12:30, when I felt more comfortable dancing. So I noticed that I feel more comfortable around the friends that I know, the guys, which makes sense - so when they start dancing, I can start too without feeling as nervous. Or something.

It was fun. We danced... my friends had a bunch of shots, I didn't partake though... maybe I should've. But it's okay. I took a few pictures, not a lot though, and even less that seemed portrait-like or worth posting (to here or to facebook). In the end, I think there were about 100 or more people, so it turned out okay. The room was pretty big so we could've fit a lot more.

Would it have been more fun if David/Ricky/Alan came? Well, I'm not sure. It probably would've been for me, but I don't know how D/R/A function in club environments, especially when they don't know others there. I would've tried to introduce everyone to everyone, and then it was up to them to continue. But it was fun. Definitely worth the $12 for me.

But... then came the bad part. All my exit strategies failed on me. Andy didn't show up, so I didn't go home with him, or stay over at his friend's house. David didn't come, so we didn't go roaming for an internet cafe where I can park myself for a few hours until the sun rose. Everyone driving, including my waterloo crew, were all full with their cars so there was no room for me. Buses and Subways weren't running anymore. It was 2:00 am, and I didn't want to call home and bug people for a ride.

I talked with my friend Ylinh, and she tried her best to find me a ride (thank you, although she doesn't know about this blog), but she couldn't... so her final suggestion was for me to call a cab.

Cab from Toronto to Mississauga. Yeah, I don't think I have to explain the rest.

Got home, had a craving for Coca-cola, had some. Mai was still having a party for her friend Sara (birthday), they were playing mario kart, so I watched. Went to bed at 5:00. Slept a lot on Sunday.

Here is a bonus picture for you.

Duy and my dad fell for it too! Wow, my sister's awesome.
