The Downfall of Magic
Oh boy, Ray will probably be happy to read this :P
Anyways, this weekend was the new set draft, and while the drafting portion was fun as usual, the part after wasn’t fun for some people. I’ve definitely seen this coming, but I wasn’t sure when it was going to happen – but long story short, the demand to play magic has fallen down, at least, for Duy, and I think also for Jason.
Alan, David, Vinh and myself still enjoy magic, and I think we can still enjoy it even without Jason and Duy – and Wen can still play it, and so can Andy. Ricky can’t and we won’t allow him into drafts anymore, nor does Ambrose, and Jia can do it a bit better than Ricky but not by much. Ray and Isaque never played magic and they won’t start, which is probably a good thing.
So Duy has quit magic officially now, so we’ll stop inviting him to drafts. Actually, that’s sort of an understatement – I think Duy only plays WOW, TotA, Smash, and.. um… ‘miyoko’ related stuffs. I think Jason also quit…
So I’ll still play a bit of magic. It’s still a fun game, and deck creating and drafting give you a bit of sense of accomplishment, like, figuring out a puzzle. I think it’s good that I introduced Magic to Vinh, because otherwise, he’d still be doing… nothing. Vinh doesn’t do a lot of things, so introducing him to anything is good. I think I notice that he’s also not as interested in magic, at least not as interested as I am – he’ll still play it, and enjoy it, but slowly he’ll end up stopping too.
Of course it affects us, with Duy and Jason quitting. Usually at this point in time (couple days after a set has come out), I’d want to buy another box, so we can have another big draft, so we can see more of the set. I don’t like looking at spoilers to see the rest of the cards because it feels like cheating, like reading gameFAQS or checking the spoilers for the end of a movie, and instead I’d rather draft and be ‘surprised’ at seeing new cards.
However, from now on, “big draft” probably means 4 people instead of 6, which is a pretty small draft if you ask me. The bigger the draft, the more new cards we’ll see, and the more fun there will be (with a larger variety of cards). Now that it’s less fun, then maybe I’ll be fine with looking at spoilers. Basically, I can look at spoilers if I don’t plan to use the new cards in the future, or have the new cards ‘surprise’ me in the draft. Since Duy and Jason left, we’d have less drafts (or smaller drafts), and thus new cards won’t ‘surprise’ me as much.
Anyway, there’s still the last set of this block coming out in the future, so I’ll still draft that one as usual, and there’s David’s fake set and Vinh’s fake set in the works, so it’ll be pretty bad if we let those go to waste, so I’ll still draft them.
Anyway, Alan mentioned the other day something about how he likes playing constructed now… well, we still have a lot of regular cards left. For those that still play magic, who wants to come over and make some constructed decks?
Weekend Updates
January weekend 12-14: I went to a birthday celebration held by Alfie, where we went to a restaurant and then to a club. We danced, we drinked. No videogames, no magic, some girls, some drinking.
January weekend 19-21: I went to Hamilton and visited Jia, and then went to an MVSA party. We drinked. A bit of videogames, a tiny bit of magic, lots of girls, lots of drinking (only some for me).
January weekend 26-28: Went to Winterlicious, then came back and we had a big party with people from ‘loo, ‘mac, and here. Lots of videogames, no magic, no girls, not really any drinking. (maybe you could say Mitch was an anti-girl).
February weekend 2-4: Went to Winterlicious, next day had a draft. Tiny bit of videogames, lots of magic, no girls, no drinking.
Feburary weekend 9-11: Will go to Winterlicious, and then I will go to a club to hang out with MVSA again. So there will be no videogames, no magic, lots of girls, and some drinking.
February reading week 16-25: I want a reading week party, because I recently got in touch with some people via facebook, people who I haven’t talked to in a while. I’m not sure what day the party will be. I’m expecting a lot of videogames, tiny bit of magic, POOSSIBLY some girls, and I think we’ll have some drinking.
So this is my chart.

I think in the past, we mostly did 26-28 and 2-4. I think the one I want to migrate towards is a mix between 19-21 and 16-25. (More 19-21 than 16-25 of course :P)
