Acqua Pictures

Friday was our Winterlicious session at Acqua, and then afterwards we had a bunch of friends over, and the party lasted till Saturday evening. Now, everyone who reads this blog was at Winterlicious (except David and Kyle, and maybe the girls), but some weren’t at the party (including David, Kyle, and maybe the girls). Additionally, Wen has blogged about most that I wanted to say (and more), so I encourage you to get on over there and read that, and comment on that. (Gears of War is awesome)

So, I will post my own subjective views on Acqua, some other things about the party, and pictures!

Apparently, I had the same three dishes Wen had, but I took pictures of all the food at the table. None of us had the Farfalle, a vegetarian pasta dish, nor the daily soup, which is some potato puree with stuff that I forgot. Makes sense, because we’re paying $35 for this meal, and the regular price for the soup is $7.50 and the Farfalle $18, so unless the dessert was $10, that would’ve been a crappy Winterlicious outing.

Anyway, we got there a few minutes late, but nothing to write home about. The dinner started pretty funny because I was asking the waiter all these questions about different juices they had. My EPIC cherry-lychee-mango juice concoction was amazing, so I was hoping they had something like that here. Most of the table ended up with a mixture of orange juice and pineapple juice, or just one of them, or the wine.

So anyway, here are the two appetizers: (click on pictures for larger versions (1024x768))

Oh, and that’s pineapple juice mixed with orange juice in the picture. I didn’t have the salad, but according to Duy, it was similar to the EPIC salad, minus the beets, but with different things… anyway, the dumplings had a unique flavour, and I really liked it! The lamb sausage was kinda salty, but it was alright. But the dumplings… yummy. I’m not a cheese connoisseur, so I can’t comment too much on the asiago.

Is that plate supposed to represent two water drops, fused together? Hmm…

Here is the risotto:

One thing I realized… salmon… isn’t too special anymore. I always thought it was a great fish, for special occasions, but then I realized I eat salmon all the time! I eat it at home, I eat it with sushi, and it’s a common fish now. Shrimps are pretty common too, but I still like those. So the sterling salmon didn’t impress me too much – sure, it’s good, but it’s salmon. So anyway, I had a little taste, I didn’t care too much for it though. I didn’t try the mushrooms or the tempura asparagus. Whether or not I’ll have the risotto at Fred’s Not Here is still up in the air.

And now, here’s my pretty picture:

Such nice presentation. On another note, the EPIC mahi mahi filet also had pretty nice representation. Too bad the mahi mahi wasn’t so good. Anyway, the Cornish hen was pretty good. Sure, it tasted a bit like seasoned chicken, but it was nicely seasoned. The rapini was fine, the sauce was pretty good. The gnocchi… meh. It didn’t taste very pumpkin like nor special-like. I did enjoy my meal.

Half the table (like, an entire side of the table) had the parfait, the other side had the crème brulee:

Ricky and I traded a spoonful of each dessert. I didn’t taste much of Ricky’s, but it seemed nice and refreshing. But my Crème Brulee… was so rich and sweet. I think it tasted a bit too sweet – but I guess that’s what Crème Brulee is. They mixed the chocolate, orange, and crème brulee pretty well and you can taste each flavour. And, like Wen and Ray say, the fresh fruit they provide is an awesome finish. It’s a good compliment to a rich, chocolate dish, just like with the EPIC chocolate mousse. The blackberry is especially good, with its texture and bursts of flavour from each tiny berry thing.

I took a picture in the bathroom:

Anyway, so that’s Winterlicious outing one. Outing two, if the weather is about the same, we have to leave a bit earlier, but we didn’t get there too late. Anyway, so then the party came – Ricky, Ray, and Jason went home, Rama, Jia, and Mitch came by and we started playing games. Warioware was played a bit, but didn’t turn out to be a big hit, or people were too distracted by other things. People played Smash, and people played things. The next day, Andy, Jason, and Ray eventually came. Wen summarized it pretty well.

Guitar Hero is pretty cool. We’ve spent some time unlocking more songs in GH1, and last night I started unlocking things in GH2. (Trogdor is a fun, yet hard, song). Nowadays, we’ve had a recent surge of games with less traditional controllers. Wiimotes and nunchuks, bongos, microphones and now guitars are quite present in our videogaming sessions. That’s fun.
