A Good Joerb

I got a job! Actually, I got a new job a bit more than a week ago, and I’m starting Monday. I’m not sure why I didn’t blog about it yet, nor did I tell a lot of people in the office or in real life. Man, most of the people in the office don’t know yet – so I’ll suddenly disappear on Monday to never come back again. It reminds me of the time when I spent a week in Waterloo, I didn’t tell the people in the office, and thus they didn’t see me for a week.

But now it’s a bit different. So yes, I have a new job. A few weeks ago I told you guys to expect some potentially interesting news; I was waiting for confirmation before I spread any news, but now it’s official. I have a new job.

I’ll be working in Toronto, around Yonge and Eglinton. I’ll be doing Flash ad campaigns and games and things like that for famous companies, like Ford and HBC Rewards. I like Flash, so it sounds like I’ll be good at it – although it sounds like it could be a really big challenge. They make it sound like there’s a big work-load and it’s very fast paced. So it’s a bit different than what I’d like to do.

I like to be creative, and make games – this is not exactly that, although a few games are involved. But, at the least, it should be good experience and a new experience too. For now I’ll commute via Go Bus/Train and Subway, but… maybe in the future, who knows? Live in Toronto? Perhaps…

So, I had an interview… a week Monday ago. Went pretty well. The company is about 15 people big, and everyone seems pretty casual – the guy that interviewed me was wearing Khaki shorts and like a Polo shirt. Another interviewer was in Jeans, Shirt and Hoodie. So I went in, brought a laptop (cuz my dad told me it would be a good idea, and it was), and showed them my stuff. They’ve seen some of it before, but now they watched and played some of the other games. Didn’t show my Zelda game though, didn’t feel as… good yet. The… oh wait, most of you (save Jason) haven’t seen this one yet. HEH.

Anyway, I showed them two of my games and they were very impressed. The lady that interviewed me was also impressed that I had a degree in Math from Waterloo. Thought I was smart. Heh. Remember what I said about being too quiet and not telling people about something? Well, here it is, first time for the blog, My Flower Animation, called The Flower’s Dream. Jason has seen it before, I think he’s the only one.

And my glass shooting game, a bit altered for my portfolio for simplicity and userfriendliness:

I think the glass game showed good fluid motion and creativity and having things work properly.

I’m a bit nervous for the job – I’m not sure what to expect, or what they are expecting from me. But I was pretty truthful in the interview – they asked me if I can do this and that, and sometimes I would say yes, sometimes I would say no. So they said one minor problem with me was that I didn’t know some of the core concepts they use, like mixing flash with XML, Databases, and Flash Remoting and some other things. Of course, everything is learnable, which I hope to do.

At the end of the interview, they asked me to e-mail them with my salary expectations. I wrote $36,000, because I don’t think Flash programmers get paid tooo much… but I wanted at least $30,000. Anyway, so they agreed to the $36,000, which is good… but it makes you wonder… if I asked for $38 or $40…. Hmmm…..? Anyway, so in the end, I got the position. I don’t know how many other people they interviewed, but I guess it’s between 2-4 more. (and in case you’re wondering, healthcare plan is… not that great. Oh well.)

And most importantly, this is the company:

So that’s it. In other news, I’m not sure who’s played my game, but I think the farthest is Oleg from the Office, who’s done about 94% of the game. Found a good number of bugs too. Also, I went to Montreal last weekend – I was the bestman for a wedding, one of 4 bestmen. Met 4 beautiful bridesmaids. I like bridesmaids. I like my bridesmaid.
