Toronto International Film Festival

Ack, it’s September 5th already? Anyway, I was planning to write something on the weekend, probably about Snakes on a Plane, and my visit to The Ex and the Lantern Festival, and some other stuff about movies and this topic too..

(Lantern Festival – long story short, the lantern festival costs too much, just to walk around and look at lanterns – looks good – but walking around and taking pictures shouldn’t cost that much – plus, I have pictures too. If you want to look at the pictures, it’ll cost you 30 cents per picture – just kidding :P)

Anyway, so I wanted to write about the Film Festival on the weekend, but now I realize it’s already the 5th, so I gotta write a short blurb about it now, since tickets start selling tomorrow, and the film festival starts Thursday.

So, the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) runs from September 7th to September 16th, and you can go around and pay money to watch movies. I think there are about… 300 different things you can watch, ranging from short 6 minute things to full length movies or pieces or whatever. I heard about it on the radio late in August, so I thought, hey, let’s go to that. After getting more “cultured” from Summerlicious, I thought it would be a good idea to try this one out.

So Ricky and I wanted to buy advanced tickets, or ticket coupons (packs of 10, etc), but I found out about it on the 24th, saw the different packages available, then went home and chose some movies, and then on the 25th, went to buy the packages but they were all sold out… =(

So, long story short, now we have to wait till tomorrow to buy tickets. I estimate the price per ticket is approximately… $18? Since the package of 10 was $154. The website for the TIFF is at

And I just checked and they have a schedule up already. The schedule now has a detailed description of each film and stuff about the director and all that, and the schedule says when the movie is playing and everything… etc… Good thing each movie plays on multiple days, or at least the popular ones…

Anyway, as I said, I made a list of movies which I kind of wanted to see. Remember, it was Ricky and I, and we would’ve split 10 tickets, so I chose 5 movies, and I haven’t checked other movies since then. Anyway… hmm… I seem to have left my detailed descriptions at work. Heh. Anyway, the movies I was thinking about were

Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for make Benefit Greatest Nation of Kazakhstan
Stranger than Fiction
Hana (Yori mo naho)
2:37
Bugmaster

Maybe I’ll update the below when I get my descriptions from work, but I think my brief summary I just wrote would do fine:

Borat – Most of us now know what this is about. It comes out in November, or we can watch it now – should be a lot of fun.

Hana (Yori mo naho) – IMDB has it at 7.8/10, 127 minutes, and it might be just like any other Chinese HK flick, so it might be good, might be bad. I put it here because it’s long so it’s worth the money, heh, and it adds some more culture to our experience. And the tagline! Isn’t this the most original thing you’ve ever heard? :

A troubled young samurai seeks revenge for the death of his father.

……

Stranger Than Fiction – I don’t know if this is a movie you’d see at a Film Festival, or pay extra to see, so maybe we’ll skip it. It looks like a funny Truman Show with Will Ferrell, so a less wacky comedy, but not quite as serious-ish as the Truman Show. But I read the synopsis and watched the trailer and I thought it could be funny. For those lazy, the synopsis from IMDB is

An IRS auditor suddenly finds himself the subject of narration only he can hear: narration that begins to affect his entire life, from his work, to his love-interest, to his death.

Check the trailer on IMDB.

Bugmaster – Katsuhiro Otomo – Akira, Metropolis, Steamboy. Sure, why not?
Whoa: Edit: Just found out it’s Live Action, not animated… hmm…. And 131 minutes. Japanese Language. Subtitles? I dunno… probably.

2:37 – Okay, this is one of those films which I think would round out the Film Festival. The description on the TIFF page isn’t quite as gutwrenching as the one I found on IMDB, but I hope it still is… pretty weird. The story follows the lives of 6 teenagers, starting in the morning, and ending at 2:37 pm, at school. Each teenager has a different problem, like drugs, or bulimia, or something with violence and suicide. I hear it’s not for the faint-of-heart, but I can pretty much stomach anything nowadays :P So I really think I’d like to see this.

Runners-up might include Jade Warrior (mix of Chinese and Finnish film), Pan’s Labyrinth (guy who made Hellboy), Princess, and some other movies – check these out if you like.

Schedule: Since I’m looking at these movies, I might as well look at the Schedules. In order of time, for convenience, we have:
