TV, TV, Bowling, Food, Food

I was going to have a post just with Food, Food, but I always want to write some stuff before the aforementioned topic.

TV1 – The other day I caught some of the Miss Universe Pageant, and my parents were watching the whole thing too. I don’t usually care too much, except maybe the start when we see all the girls from all the countries – they were in costume at the start this time, and that was exciting. My favourite was Japan’s costume, which was a Samurai outfit, complete with a sword. Apparently, later they had an award for best costume, and Japan won it.

When it got to top 20, I was glad to see Japan was still there. What a cute girl! So, my top 3 choices for winning were Japan, Trinidad & Tobago, and… maybe Russia. When it got to top 10, Russia was out, and then top 5, T&T was out. Japan was still in the top 5! And she was very cute – good answers too, to some very difficult questions. She even spoke French and English, that was impressive.

But unfortunately, Japan ended up 2nd place, which was pretty good, but not good enough. Poor girl. But she’s cute. Unless I think of someone else, I’ll say she’s my favourite Japanese girl =) If someone can get me a date with her, I’ll be very happy =P

TV2 – On Monday I saw both, one of the worst things I’ve ever seen on Wheel of Fortune, and one of the best. It was teen tournament, so there were pairs of kids from 13-17 year old I think, and it was the final round. The two girls in first position said “P”, two of them appeared, sending them up to a total of $13,000. Now the board reads:
Category: Fun and Games
P _ C K _ P
B A S K E T B A L L

And the two girls just stood there, looking confused… then the next team goes, and instead of like “I!” or “U!” they were like “ … U?” and then they got it.
Anyway, the first team won about $20,000 before that, so they still made it to the bonus round. RSTLNE, and they get:
Category: Fictional Characters
_ _ _ _
L _ _ _ T _ E _ R

The chose PADM, or PDMA, and then they have
_ _ _ _
L _ _ _ T _ E A R

And then they got it right away! So congrats you two girls. And furthermore, they won $100,000! So I think that was pretty neat, since they only got one letter. Those are some smart thinking girls, at least, for the bonus round.

Bowling – Went bowling again today. It seems every Tuesday is unofficial bowling night. First, scored 79. I was happy with that. Second round, after the first 5 things, I had 31; I was thinking to myself, oh no, I’m going to get average (62ish) again. But I turned things around and got 97.

Third round got 92, and last round got 86. Note that in the last game, I got an 11-point strike and a 10-point spare, which sucked royal. But, average is going up, and potential is going up too. If that strike was 14 points and that spare was 14 points instead, that would bring me to 100. And I got 66 points in the 2nd half of game 2, so that’s a lot of potential too.

Food1 – La Maquette

Our second outing for Summerlicious was dinner at La Maquette. I was looking forward to this one because I chose this restaurant – Epic/Canoe were chosen by Ray and Geoff, and I chose La Maquette, after looking at the other choices.

Dinner was at 7:30 instead of 8:15 this time, so it was a bit brighter out when we started to eat, and we came about 15 minutes early. They had a table ready for us near the window and door, but Ray didn’t like it so we asked for a table more indoor. The service was quite good here – they were quick, and they were always around to help you. At Epic, they pretty much just came to drop off food or collect money.

The food was cooked quite quickly too – We sat down around 7:15, they got our orders by 7:30, and the entrée was on our table by 7:50. So basically, I’m saying that the service at La Maquette was better than at Epic.

Appetizer:
Shrimp Cocktail
or
Smoked Chicken Broth
with Sweet Potato Dumpling garnished with julienne of vegetables

Note the drink – they didn’t have a list of non-wine drinks, but they had a bartender who could mix drinks. Geoff got some papaya drink, so I asked the waitress if I could have a drink with some mango in it. She got me a drink, asked me if it tasted like mango, and I said… “… no, not at all, really.” I had Ricky, Duy, and Ray try it later, and they too agreed that the mango wasn’t there, unless you specifically looked for it, and even then, it’s just minor. Short story long, I got the drink for free.

Anyway, so the choices for Appetizer were Shrimp Cocktail and that other one. Last time I had the Beet salad cuz it sounded so special compared to the Chilled Pea soup, but both were quite special. The chicken broth sounds… sorta simple, but sorta special – and the shrimp cocktail sounded very plain, but I went with that anyway, hoping they would put some special spin on it.

They didn’t, but it was good shrimp nonetheless. I tasted some of the broth, didn’t feel special to me, and from the looks of it, it just looks like soup with very little floating in it. So, even if I didn’t taste much of the soup, I think I’ll say that I’m glad I went with the shrimp cocktail. Cuz I like shrimp.

(On another note, the bread they served was pretty good. Butter was already in slices, and that… what’s that bread… pumpernickel? Sounds like the right name, heh. Me stupid. But yeah, Geoff and I liked that bread.)

Entrée:
Rolled Veal Stuffed with Apricots and Pinenuts
Served with Roasted Garlic, French Shallots and enhanced with Calvados
or
Salmon and King Crab Roulade served with Grapefruit Beurre Blanc

There are reasons why I chose La Maquette, this being one of them. Both items sound delicious, but I went with the Salmon and King Crab Roulade. I know what Rouladen is in Germany, I hoped it would be the same thing here. I think Roulade just means some type of Roll, or rolled up something – maybe just like the rolled veal, heh.

This is Ricky’s veal. I tasted some of it, it was pretty good. That’s some potato stuff under it I think.

This is another shot of my Salmon and King Crab Roulade, opened up. That’s the crab inside the salmon. It was quite good. Instead of the meal taking 5 minutes to eat at Epic, this took at least… 15? I didn’t quite count, but I know it was at least 13… I think :P Anyway, the salmon was great. I wanted more crab, but what can ya do?

Dessert:
Mango Tiramisu Heart
served with Mango and Raspberry Coulis
or
Mandarin Crème Mousse
served on Baileys Crème Anglaise

That’s the 2nd reason I chose this restaurant. Can you guess which one I had? I had the Mango Tiramisu Heart. Both desserts were good. Once again, I tried a spoon of Geoff’s Mandarin Crème Mousse, tasted sorta like the Chocolate Mousse from Epic, but not the same, of course. The Tiramisu heart was awesome. It wasn’t as strong of a Tiramisu as I would’ve liked, but it was still fantastic.

Anyway, so that was the 3-course meal. It was quite filling. Anyway, Ray heard that La Maquette’s cheesecake was the best in town, so Ray and Ambrose had a slice.

I had a nibble, and what I got from it was great. Well, it was okay. Well, it was really small, so I should’ve gotten a bigger nibble, but it was pretty good. And… that was our experience with the 2nd outing with summerlicious. I had a free drink, so I paid $35 + tx and tip. Geoff had that drink, so he paid $40 + tx + tip, I think. And Ray and Ambrose both had wine ($9) and slice of cheesecake ($10), so it was a tad more expensive for them.

So… and that ends our Summerlicious! Was it worth it? Sure. Would I do it again? Hopefully, next time, just for lunches - $15-$20 beats $25-35, for about the same amount of food, maybe a bit less, different selection, but it’s all good.

Food2 – Ribfest

On the way to La Maquette, via the Go Bus, we passed by Square One and saw they were having RibFest. So, Sunday, we (Ricky and I) decided to go, and dragged along Duy, Jason, and Alan.

So we went – admission was free, everything else costs money. First, Ricky and I bought some corn on the cob. Well, Ricky bought it twice, so one was for me, yay. Then we got some ribs. Ricky bought a full rack, Duy and I bought a full rack, and Alan and Jason bought a full rack, and then we would share it all.

Unfortunately, about this point my fingers got really messy so I couldn’t take pictures of the actual ribs, at least, not the ones that I bought. See, everyone else had to line up for ribs – I went to a place with no line, and, as I later discovered, no trophies. The ones with lines, had trophies – more trophies, better the ribs, and thus, longer the lines.

The ones I bought, are HUGE – huge ribs, so maybe 60% more meat than Jason’s or Ricky’s ribs. They were also tougher to eat, and had tougher meat, and the sauce was just on the outside and it was only okay. Quantity doesn’t always beat Quality – and this is one of those cases.

Jason’s and Ricky’s ribs were smaller, but they were better – the sauce, the way it’s cooked, the texture and taste of the meat – yum, yum, yum. I think I like Jason’s and Alan’s ribs the best, although I don’t remember much anymore. I just know that my ribs failed.

After that, Ricky bought some Goat Roti for him and I to share, and I bought some Fudge.

And that's it. Now if someone can get me a date with that Japanese girl... I think her name's Kurara Chibana....
