My Mini-Vacation in Waterloo

Okay, so I’m back from Waterloo now, and of course, I would blog about it. I’m not sure how concise or descriptive I should be, so I’ll just write a few sentences about this and that, here and there.

So I went with Ambrose (and Duy, and Jason Wong) Sunday evening to the ‘Loo, and came back with Ambrose to ‘SSauga on Friday evening.

Sunday

Nothing too special about Sunday. Played some Smash Bros, Jason and Alan came over, and then Ambrose drove me home and let me in. I met Danny, the other roommate, and then I brushed my teeth and started sleeping.

Monday

I woke up at 8:00, hoping to catch Wen before he leaves, so I can ask him some questions, but alas, he had already left. Shortly after, I realized there were no phones in the house. Everyone used cell phones. So let’s see – no phones, no internet (no computer of my own), and no keys. So basically, I was stuck in the house until Danny woke up.

So I went back to bed, woke up at 9:00, and decided to have breakfast. I didn’t want to make anything spectacular or burn down any kitchens, nor did I want to intrude too much, so I had toast with jam. Around 10:30, Danny woke up, I used his cellphone to try to call Ambrose so he can pick me up, but he wasn’t available. So, I decided to walk, and Danny locked the door for me on the way out.

While I was walking, it started to rain (just like on Ching’s blog). And, just like Ching, I didn’t have an umbrella, nor a jacket with a hood, so I walked a bit faster, but I couldn’t tank it anymore so when I got close to Duy’s, instead I ducked into an HMV.

Bad idea. If you stick me into a store with sales, I tend to buy stuff. And that I did. I thought I might have lots of free time this week, so I thought I’d catch up on some movies I haven’t seen. All in all, I bought about $100 worth of movies.

The weather cleared up, and I continued my walk to Duy’s place. Eventually, it was lunch time. Duy and Ambrose ate in, but as part of my mini-vacation, I decided to explore and revisit the Waterloo plaza. One of the newer places was Charlie’s Lunchbox, so I went there. I had a choice between the regular Chicken breast and tempura, or the spicy chicken – I wanted to try something with a kick, so I had the spicy chicken. It was sorta spicy, but definitely edible, so that was pretty good.

I forget if it was this day, but we started playing PGR2 – Duy, myself, Jason Wong and Terry – and they’re pretty good. So it was a lot of fun. Jason Yu joined us on Tuesday, and that made it even more fun. Good times, good times.

Anyway, the main event for Monday was the Smash Bros. tournament. When we got there, it looked like there wasn’t much competition. As usual, Duy and Ambrose were dominating for most of the tournament. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the skills this time, and did quite poorly. I’m thinking about retiring Samus and trying a faster character like Falco. I think Falco’s more fun to play, but I don’t think I play him as good as other Falco’s. But who’s to say C-left C-right doesn’t work so well?

Anyway, when it got close to the end, Duy met his match. Some Sheik beat his Link on Final Destination, twice, so Duy got 2nd place, and Ambrose got 3rd. We still made money though, so it’s still good. Anyway, like with the first tournament, we took our winnings and went to East Side Mario’s.

On the way there, Jason won by finding $70 on the ground.

ESM was understaffed, so they said it would take longer, but it didn’t really. So we ate, and it was pretty good. I didn’t finish my meal, so I took the rest to go. We went back home, played some more PGR with the others, and Ambrose gave me his key, and I walked home.

You know what my favourite time of date and time of day are? I think some people might agree with me, and this is my 2nd time I’ve experienced this. I would have to say my favourite time and date are between 2:00 and 4:00 am, on a night in July. It’s so hot inside the houses in Waterloo, and then you step outside and take in a breeze of fresh air.

Walking home in such weather is quite nice.

Tuesday

I didn’t set my alarm this time, so I woke up around 11:00. It was around now that I noticed my bag smelled like garlic and olive oil. It seems some of the ESM Pasta has leaked and now my bag smells like garlic. There was some grease on my cd cases too, so I washed it off. Actually, my bag still smells like garlic.

So, brunch was good. Afterwards, I walked to Duy’s place. It’s really not that long of a walk – maybe 15-20 minutes. It’s sweltering hot in the morning but nice and cool in the evening. But the walking is still good.

I don’t remember much about Tuesday day time – I assume we just played a lot of PGR and Ninja Gaiden. Anyway, one of the things I like about Waterloo are the cheap chicken wing nights they have at different restaurants. So, it was decided that today we go to Molly Bloom’s and have chicken wings for dinner. Alan and Jason had class at 7:00, so we decided to eat at 6:00.

Wen joined us for wings, and wings were good. After, Alan and Jason decided to skip their boring anthropology class, and at the spur of the moment, we decided to go bowling. Looking for a bowling place in Waterloo was hard, but eventually we found one. Unfortunately, it was a 5-pin place, but we drove so far so we decided to stay.

Turns out, I suck at both 10-pin bowling and 5-pin bowling. Near the end, since my score sucked so much, I tried to throw spin balls – they’re kinda funny, but they rarely hit anything. Hehe.

After a few rounds of bowling, Wen went home and we went to Duy’s. I suggested we played Bridge, and Jason then suggested to go to Bubble Tea, since that’s the official Bridge-playing place. So we did. Bubble Tea was good as I remember it – I didn’t think that Duy and Alan and Jason would bubble tea a lot.

“Bubble Tea places have nice looking girls, both as customers and as servers.”

Wednesday

It rained again on Wednesday. When Danny woke up, I asked if he had a spare umbrella, but he didn’t. Also, Ambrose wasn’t available to come pick me up until 3 hours later. So, I could either wait for Ambrose, or wait for the rain to clear, both which would take a long time. I pour myself a bowl of rice krispies, and, with my HMV purchases in hand, I decided to watch a movie.

In deciding which movie to watch, I thought about who would want to watch which movies, as a group or whatever. I bought Monty Python and the Holy Grail because I haven’t seen it yet, but I think that would be better seen in a group with others who haven’t seen it yet – same with Dogma. David kind of randomly-wanted-to-see Waking Life, and I’ve heard of it before, and it was cheap, so I bought it.

So my choices were between Donnie Darko, and One Hour Photo, which, if I’m not mistaken, David mentioned one day. Flipped a mental coin, and thought that One Hour Photo might not be so much of a group-movie, so I watched that.

I say it was pretty good. The film sure emphasizes the loneliness that a clerk, or wal-mart employee might feel. I can’t say it was too surprising or whatever, and the ending was… a bit… odd though, but whatever. Anyway, soon after the rain stopped, but Ambrose didn’t want to pick me up, so I walked, hoping the rain wouldn’t start again.

By now, it was already lunch time again, so I step into Mikey’s for lunch, another official Waterloo place. Katherine still works there. She’s been serving me delicious Sesame chicken for over 5 years, and she’s still doing it.

Like Tuesday, I don’t remember much of the day time – more games I think? I think there was some Mario Tennis here too, a fierce competition between Ambrose, Jason Wong, Terry, and… um… that other guy.

On Wednesdays, the group plays badminton, so I decided to join in. Before badminton, we ate at Kismet, which used to be Taj Palace, which used to be Chester’s Fried Chicken. That lady doesn’t work there anymore, and now it’s run by these two guys. I had the Chicken Tikka, which is the least chicken I’ve seen on a plate which huge pieces of bread. It was kinda disappointing. The mango juice was good though, albeit a bit expensive. Next time I just want to go for the Mango Lassi.

Badminton was fun! I’m actually not bad at it, but I can still improve a lot, especially when the bird is about to land far away from me. Gotta reach for those shots. Anyway, the set-up with the rotating courts and whatever was okay, but it wasn’t perfect. We were screwed out of several games, so we didn’t get to play so often.

After Badminton, went to Bubble Tea again. Good times.

Thursday

I didn’t have breakfast, and etc etc, we decided to walk to Pizza Hut for their lunch buffet, Jason and Alan and Duy and I. Lunch was good, and then at the same time we decided to have a small magic draft, so we went to J&J’s right after.

At J&J’s, we bought the magic packs, I bought a new poker chip set (I wanted more official ones, and a case), and… as a sort of impulse buy, especially from Duy and Jason, we bought the World of Warcraft boardgame.

We had the magic draft, it was good. Well, I think it was good.

We went out for some Sushi. Sorta expensive, but pretty good. Didn’t finish all my things, so I saved it for later.

And, we started playing the World of Warcraft boardgame. I checked some reviews on the net, and it averages around 7.2/10, or most people give it scores between 7 and 8. The game boasts an average playlength of 2-4 hours, and they weren’t kidding. Actually, our game must’ve taken the better part of 7 hours spread over two days… heh. (Did it really take that long?)

::edit:: I guess I should mention about the game. If the game was ~$30, I would've easily contributed, even if I didn't think much of WOW. But the game was $75, so I didn't like the idea of spontaneously buying it at the spur of the moment. Alan and I did contribute a little, but not the even 25%.

Fortunately, the game itself is pretty good - I enjoyed it, and I can see how it can have replay value. I'm going to start by saying it IS NOT D20/D&D, but I will use d20 to explain the game. D20 is a complex game, a pencil and paper rpg, with limitless possibilities, up to what the DM decides. I would have to say WOW: the boardgame can be looked as a subset of D20.

There are no pencils in WOW - everything is done by cards and tokens. The game comes with over 1000 cards and tokens - tokens that represent enemies, life points, energy points, money, auras, etc. So, while d20 is infinite and much harder to play, WOW is finite and has a set of rules, and such is easier to play.

Without getting into too many details, you start at level 1, and you play in teams, horde vs(?) alliance. You go around, doing quests (defeating enemies), using 3 special d8's that do different things during combat. You buy skills and you get talents when you level up. You buy weapons and tools from merchants, and at the end maybe you'll fight the big boss at the end.

So in D20, you have infinite weapons and a large number of dice, and infinite options during level up (bunch of talents, skills, etc) - the story is up to the DM. In WoW, everything is more finite, and you can see everything happening on the map. So overall, WoW was a pretty fun experience. There are a bunch of classes and small differences between horde and alliance, and a bunch of quests and unique items (which we're not looking at, to keep the game more secret), so there's still plenty of life left. Also, the game manual hints at an expansion pack in the future...
::/end edit::

Anyway, one of the things I wanted to do this week, with help from Alan, was to meet up with Betty and Vanessa. It’s one of those things I should do every now and then. Unfortunately, Alan had a hard time getting in touch with them. We thought we should go to TCBY with them and hang out, but that didn’t happen.

But with the thought of TCBY in mind, we decided to go, the 4 of us. I tell myself it’s frozen yoghurt, so it costs more, but really it just feels like expensive icecream. Actually, it feels like expensive soft serve. But, it was a nice treat, and it wasn’t too expensive, just had smaller portions.

Anyway, when we get back, Alan gets a call from Betty, and eventually she comes over.

“She’s cute.”

I haven’t seen Betty in a while, and she looks good. It was good to see her again. Anyway, I decided we should take a walk, instead of, like, her watching us play World of Warcraft. We (Jason, Alan, Betty and I; Duy stayed home) walked for about 45-65 minutes, which was pretty nice. Good conversation too.

Then we went back and continued the WOW game. The guys had class at 9:30 the next morning, so we paused the game around 3:00am and went to bed.

Friday

I went to bed at 3:30, so I got up around 10:00. I didn’t want to waste too much of the day sleeping – I could do that in ‘ssauga. I told myself, a week in Waterloo wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Mel’s Diner, our official, original Waterloo dining place, even if prices went up over the years. So I got to Mel’s Diner around 10:45 and ordered a Mel’s Favourite, the typical cheap breakfast.

“There was a cute girl sitting near me who wore clothing that looked like she could’ve been from the 60’s. So cute and happy.”

I got to Duy’s around 11:30, but I didn’t get inside until 11:40 – Duy was the only one home, and it took me about 10 minutes to find the doorbell. Knocking on the door didn’t work for 10 minutes. I thought I might’ve had to spend another $100 at HMV… heh. Luckily, I didn’t.

Duy and I played some Ninja Gaiden for a bit – I got Duy to beat a few levels, and… I’m still stuck in level 1. Oh well. Around 2:30, Jason and Alan came over and we finished our World of Warcraft game. I had a late breakfast, so I skipped lunch, and after the game was finished it was 5:45, so just in time for dinner.

After very little discussion, we concluded that a week in Waterloo wouldn’t be complete without a meal at Mel’s Diner. I withheld the fact that I ate there already, so we went there. I considered having my Hot Hamburger, but instead went with one of the classics, the Elvis burger, with all the trimmings and a garden salad to “balance” the meal. During the meal we finally played some Hearts, which I haven’t played in so long. Duy and Jason shot a bunch of times, I couldn’t pull it off. The Elvis burger was too much for me, so I packed it up to save for later.

We finished shortly after 7, and then it was time to go back to ‘ssauga with Ambrose.

When I came home, nobody was home – they were out eating somewhere. I just relaxed when I got home, but before I decided my mini-vacation was over, I did one more Waterloo-ish thing; I watched episodes 1 and 2 of Lost. (I’ll blog about that next.)
