Playstation, Workstation
Wow, 8 Firefly related comments, sweet. There should be a prize for us each time we convince someone to watch the series. Maybe Joss Whedon should create a second series. Maybe a spin-off detailing Shepherd Book’s past? Hmm….
Before we start, let me say that yesterday I went insane trying to get my internet to work. If you come to my house now, you’ll see this one network cable from the upstairs going all the way downstairs and plugging into the router… that was fun…
Anyway, on to the topic: Playstation, Workstation. I’ve always wanted to do this, but I didn’t feel comfortable asking my parents for one of these – but now that I’m making money, I could get one of these, although now my parents want me to try to put it as a business expense, use the company’s account.
Long story short, I’m getting a new computer. Not a new computer to replace this current one, but to complement it. See, this current computer, it’s fast, powerful, but… it’s junked up. It’s hard to clean up, and if I do, eventually it will be junked up again. First, there’s no more hard drive space.
There’s too many movie files, anime files, music, games, you name it – it will take 40 dvds, speaking of which, the dvd burning is really bad on this computer now. THAT I should replace though, since I’ll still be burning with this computer…
Also, a lot of programs won’t work, and a lot of programs don’t run as efficiently as they should. In terms of anime and movie files, way back then, it was all nice, cuz all there was was DivX, and Adobe Premiere would run fine. Now, there’s hundreds of other codecs, ranging from DivX, XVid, those OGG files, those MKV files… Sony HandyCam needs a certain codec, Cameras tape video with a MotionJPEG codec… so my computer’s junked up with codecs.
Which is fine and dandy for Media Player, not so fine and dandy for Adobe Premiere. Then there are the weird things about this computer – 3DSMax won’t run, I don’t know why. After I installed Adobe Premiere Pro, I installed ULead Videofactory 10, Flash MX, and Adobe Indesign, and None of them work! Adobe Premiere must’ve done something, that it didn’t do to my computer at work… weird, eh?
Okay, so that’s my rant. And my solution is the new computer. This computer, the junk computer, is my Playstation. I play games, I watch anime, I surf the web and download things constantly. My new computer, is the Workstation.
The Workstation… well, you probably can already guess what it does. It tries to stay as clean as possible, and it will be able to run Adobe Premiere, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign; Flash MX; 3D Studio Max; MS Office; and a few other programs fine. I think I’ll be fine with just Divx too.
So that’s the workstation. I’ll probably use the Playstation 90% of the time and the Workstation 10% of the time… well, if 3DSMax works, maybe I’ll get my creative juices flowing and I can work with that. As for the specs of the new computer, it’s a bit better than this current one:
It’s a Dell, just like most of the other desktops in the house.
I think both computers are 3.20Ghz; I think this new computer has some “double” chip, so it’s a Pentium D, and the other is a Pentium 4.
There was a sale at the time where the 2nd gig of ram was free, so I got that.
The upgrade from 320 to 500 gigs of space was cheap, so I went with the 500 gig option.
I’m trying out the Windows Media Center OS.
Still a 256 mb video card – I don’t think I’ll need to upgrade that anytime soon.
And… the rest of the options are pretty standard. So this workstation will be used to make 3D animation and pictures, and to edit video. Additionally, I will probably connect the TV to it and record and edit that too. That 500 gigs will become useful then.
(Man, I’ll be sitting beside this computer, not using it all the time. It will feel a bit wasted… I’m sitting here with 20 gigs left, and the new computer to my left has 400 gigs left, but I can’t transfer stuff to it…)
