Gankutsuou Videos
Ooh, apparently David is really looking forward to the Gankutsuou videos. I didn’t think he’d be so eager… I guess that little description I wrote worked wonders. I wonder how high his expectations are…
Anyway, so I’ve been talking about Firefly for a while now, and hinting that David might like it… so I talk about characters and development and story and feelings… and then Kyle comes along and comments about Mal and how he might be David’s type, then David saw his picture and now he really wants to see Firefly! That, and he wants to know whether he… oh wait, that’s a spoiler… or is it?
Anyway, unfortunately, I don’t think getting David to like Gankutsuou will work the same. I can’t just show a picture of young Albert or incredibly charming Count… so instead, I made some videos, like I did with Elfen Lied.
I got David to like Elfen Lied! At least, what he saw of it, which is pretty much Episodes 8 and 9, the flashback episodes. The episodes with emotion, and the sadness, and all that… the episodes that give character to Lucy, which, otherwise, she would’ve just been a killing machine. Now David knows why she kills.
Anyway, my objective for Gankutsuou wasn’t as clear. Gankutsuou is a re-telling of the Count of Monte Cristo story, with some twists and different perspectives. Count of Monte Cristo is a 120-minute movie, and this is a 480-minute series… Anyway, so my objective wasn’t clear. With Lucy, I showed the flashback episodes of when she was little and happy and sad and whatever, the things that would make David feel for the character or even cry or whatever.
With Gankutsuou… well, that’s not to say you won’t cry, because… you will… I promise… but it’s harder to show that in such a trailer. Anyway, my description that I wrote the other day was “anime about a young naïve boy who finds happiness in many situations” or something like that, so I tried to show some of that off.
I guess I should tell you a little bit about the story, at least, in the first half. If you don’t know the tale of the Count of Monte Cristo, that’s okay. I didn’t realize this was a re-telling of that until about episode 7, so it’s okay.
So my point of this video was the “Young Albert and how he finds happiness”, and the caring relationship between Albert and Franz, who are childhood friends… and of course, there’s the Count. I love the Count. Albert loves the Count too. See, the thing is that the Count is quite manipulative, but Albert doesn’t see it. Albert loves the Count so much, and he feels their friendship is genuine. Heck, before I knew this was the Count of Monte Cristo I also felt the friendship was genuine. So you might as well fall into that illusion too.
You’ll see it. There are a few points when the Count singles out Albert, to show him that their friendship is unique. He would give him presents or tell him secrets that he will keep, so that their friendship is truly their own and not anyone else’s.
So… I don’t know if I just made the Count sound like an ass, or that Albert is stupid, but hopefully not. Albert is innocent, and… well, the Count reminds me of… well, I’m not sure if I should bring this up cuz it might be a bit of a bad subject, so I’ll let you ponder on what that means…
Anyway, that’s enough about the content. I took clips from episodes 1, 2, 3, and another episode, so the story is indeed fragmented so don’t worry about that. There’s the other major obstacle, which is the art style. I LOVE the art style. After a few episodes, you get used to it for sure, but every now and then it’s still so pretty to look at. First of all, it’s colourful, and very pretty. However, it could make some people dizzy or something. So try to love the art style, heh.
I recommend you watch some of these clips over and over. Maybe you’ll get used to the art style, maybe not. It’s a shame if you liked the story but couldn’t handle the art style, or vice versa.
So… I guess that’s enough talking? Here come the clips, in WMV format, so anyone can play them. The audio and video aren’t always in sync, so I tried to work on that but I can’t guarantee too much.
So… try to enjoy it! Might be slow, but David likes slow. Might be artistic… and that’s good… and etc…. enough talking….
Each clip is about 14 minutes long and about 22 megs in size. I recommend watching big enough so you can see the textures and subtitles. Watch both clips, maybe you'll like the other one better.. I hope it downloads well for you guys, since I always have reports of things timing out on my webspace. Maybe I should learn to rapidshare?
