Unknown Not Previews

Okay, technically, most, or all of your cards should be done by now, but of course that's not the case, but oh well. Preview week is starting soon, and ideally you shouldn’t get any new ideas from preview week. Maybe I’m making too big of a deal about it, but truthfully, yes, you’re not supposed to have preview week change your cards around and stuff. But, oh well, whatever.

As a countdown to preview week, which is a countdown to the draft, I now present you with Preview Cards #Negative 2, which actually means a card that didn’t make the cut. I do have about 30 cards that didn’t make the cut, and about another 60 cards that I’ve made that didn’t get in because it was full already.

On to the article…

Way back when we first had SLB, before we had it, we had the idea of “nominating cards”, real cards from Magic so that we can balance the game, have some “real” cards. I had a few good suggestions, and as a last minute idea, I stuck in “Biorhythm”. David rejected that idea, because it was such a game-changing spell – and we don’t want such things to be the highlight of our fake set.

I just as easily could’ve nominated in Wrath of God or Armageddon. But just like Biorhythm, the game wouldn’t be fun, or, more correctly, it’s not as interesting as a game-changing idea in a fake set. Rather than winning because all my creatures live and all yours die, we’d rather win because I brought out a 5/8 flying samurai because all your plains were tapped and there was an instant on the stack. Or something odd like that. And thus, by nature, these two were early to go.

Board clearers. And not even very good ones. The white one kills tokens and multiple creatures of the same name, which doesn’t happen too often in a draft format. The second creates a major advantage to playing white black, and even then it’s not so great; and otherwise, this card wouldn’t be drafted if you weren’t playing white black. Also, while it wasn’t intended, I wouldn’t be surprised if someone drafted Left Below because they read it wrong. So, these two left early, and made room for more interesting rares.

That doesn’t mean there aren’t any board clearers in my portion of Unknown – only more restrictive ones or more strategic ones perhaps, or maybe none at all. We’ll just have to see…
