Study Habits and what they are doing now

Let's Begin!
I feel like updating. Sorta. My first exam’s on Saturday, Psych 101, and… it’s Wednesday night, and… well, I’m doing pretty good with the studying. Read all the necessary chapters, read Alan’s notes, and did the end of chapter quizzes, which I did pretty well on. A bit more overall-studying, and then I should be good. The other exams are a different story though.

Anyway, I was thinking since I got David to view Elfen Lied clips, I can now create more clips of different anime, put them together, and let David preview them! But I haven’t done that yet, but maybe in the future, when I need larger procrastination moments.

As for song of the day… ehhh… nobody comments about those anymore. It used to be David for some, and then it just stopped. My song of the day is like Ambrose’s subtle comment asking-for-deal. Anyway, I’m listening to this now, so I’ll just use this. This is another favourite oc-remix from the newest batch.

I think I’ll just call it that; giving it a label, like which game it’s from, might make people not bother to download it, because they don’t know the game or whatever. So mwahabwahahaha. But I like it. Sounds really peaceful to my ears… I could listen to it while studying… (oh yeah, like Ambrose’s thing, add comments ^^)

lifeFrame
Should I try Ambrose’s mumble Jumble? Well, actually I’ve already done that, years ago, when the Internet first started! Okay, not that early, but more like, about a year after I got my hotmail account. I posted this in Ambrose’s comments for the most recent entry:

http://www.baomon.com/old/lifeFrame.html

This is an old account of stuff, from some period around 1997. It’s philosophical and psychological, mumble jumble, rambling, funny, and sometimes really annoying to read, because of its mumbly jumblyness. But it’s also very insightful and… yes, funny. And LONG. Very long. ENJOY! (post comments below as well)

What are they up to now?
Well, it’s time for another edition of “What are they up to now?”

Ray, Jason, Duy, and Alan:

World of Warcraft.

/End

Okay, that’s the short version of it. More specifically, it’s like:
5-9 hours of sleep
0-4 hours of studying
6-14 hours of WoW
1 hour of food. So that leaves in between 12 and… well, -4 hours left for the rest of the day. So an average Jason day would be (8,4,10,1,1), and an average Duy day is (7,0,14,1,2). At least, this is nowadays, during class time… well, it was about the same, except more studying (class) and less WoW, food, and sleep.

Jason also mentioned today that recently he went outside and headed to the library to study, and on the way he was confused why there weren’t exclamation marks and question marks over people’s heads. He also thought he saw an exclamation mark on some guy’s head, but upon closer inspection it was a tree branch.

And yes, we all know Alan has recently blogged, about a week ago, but that didn’t give much insight to what he was up to. He mentioned to me a story about the umbrella and the banning from campus pizza, so he told me those stories but he didn’t blog about them like he said he would.

Current doings
Okay, I just watched a few minutes of Conan (just the beginning, because I didn’t know the guests so I didn’t care) and then I played Wheel of Fortune on MSN 7 beta with Lorah for a few rounds. So instead of it being 12:35, it’s now 1:43.

So, Conan has a few… quirks, or themes on his show. His String Dance, his Donald Trump impression, etc; and he often mentions the merger of NBC and Universal, blah blah blah, so every now and then he pulls that lever and they would show a clip of Walker, Texas Ranger (Ambrose knows what I’m talking about).

It’s like, WTF is WTR? It looks like a show like that… martial… law… show… but really… odd and funny. And silly. I love those clips! They’re so funny. Hehe… I’m talking to myself now… and Ambrose too… I’ve made enough references to Ambrose’s blog in the first few paragraphs, now Ambrose and I know what this paragraph’s all about… Conan…. We watch Conan… I don’t think the others do… and I liked that episode where he had music from… Beverly Hills Cop or whatever that was… I love that song…

Anyway, so Lorah got me to download MSN 7 Beta. And with that, we played Wheel of Fortune. 2 player, it’s fun. I’d just like to share with you 3 bonus rounds we’ve encountered. Who knew winning $100,000 could be this easy? So of the 3, mine was the hardest:
Thing: RSTLNE: _ _ _ _ _ _ N _ (space) _ N T E R E S T
And Lorah got these two, the first winning her $100,000 :P
People: RSTLNE: T E E N _ _ E R S
People: RSTLNE: T R _ _ L E T S

Hehe.

Studying and what other stuff
So what I been up to? Well, it’s best summarized in 4 words: studying, anime, and paper Mario. I’ve seem to found a new study habit routine. Not sure if it works with other courses, but for this, all I have to do is read and memorize for the most part.

So my new habit? Well, I read, and then I take a break. Sounds simple enough, eh? More specifically, I would read a few sections, and then take a break. That is, the psychology text book is broken up into chapters, which are broken up into modules (subchapters), which in themselves are broken up into subsections, and those broken up into… well, paragraphs.

So I would read a few pages or subsections of a module, and then I would take a break. What I read, I decide; I can read as little as a paragraph or as much as a few modules. It’s up to me; that is, I don’t set myself a specific # of pages or specific # of subsections, nor a specific amount of time. I read comfortably at my own pace, without a specific goal.

It sounds weird. Usually people set attainable goals, but not this time. What I would do is start a module, and then check how many pages it has; that’s my tiny goal. Then I would read paragraphs until I feel like taking a break (it gets distracting, or I just don’t feel like it anymore). Maybe if I have 2 paragraphs left until the next subsection, I’d read those, and the beginning of that subsection to get a preview of it. Sometimes from reading the preview, I continue reading for a bit more.

By doing this, I’m setting my own pace, but most of all, I’m not making my breaks seem like Extrinsic Rewards. If I told myself to read a certain # of pages or time, and then said that I could take a break after I do that, then I might not read properly, and just read really fast to get my break. Luckily too, the text is interesting, which fuels my intrinsic motivation.

So that’s it. Make the studying intrinsic, and take breaks when you need to. Breaks are usually 4 minutes long, by watching anime. So an anime usually lasts for 5-6 breaks. Additionally, after a good accomplishments of a few modules, or just some times during the day, I went downstairs and played a few hours of Paper Mario. And now I beat it :)

Personalizationishtic studying
And of course, you can make studying better when being able to apply the info to your own life. In the book they talked about School Rumble’s “Suspension Bridge Theory”, I thought that was cool. And in reading, I have a theory as to why Alan doesn’t like Original Smash!

It’s because when he plays it, he’s depressed. One thing found in depressed people is that they blame themselves when something bad happens, and they find external blame when something good happens. So whenever he falls a stupid death, he says “it’s because I am not good at this game.” Whenever he forces someone, we tell him that we’re proud that he learned to force someone, but he just says “That was a fluke.” And thus, Alan is depressed while playing original Smash. He says he’s no good at it, and whenever something good happens it’s not his fault, and thus he doesn’t like it, and it’s a vicious cycle which breeds depression.

OH NO! This update will be too long!
Man, this blog entry’s gonna get UBER long if I keep writing. So I’ll end it like an anime:

Next episode preview:

Why does Bao still play online poker? What did he think of Paper Mario? Will he able to overcome Halo 2 Legendary?

Will Metroid Prime Echoes ever come into our home? How about Outrun2?

Why is Azumanga so awesome? What about School Rumble 7, Gankutsuou 6-7, and Samurai Champloo 2?

What’s the deal with tipping?

Find out next time, on Bao’s blog! Wait and hope! Don’t miss it! Look forward to it!
