Indignation!

Okay, it’s Monday September 6th now, Labour Day. All non-UW people have moved back to their residences, as school starts tomorrow. Ambrose is in Ottawa now. Wen is done his work term, yet Jason has somehow been chosen to continue work. We don’t have the keys to our place in ‘Loo back yet, but we’ll get that soon enough. Lots of blogs have updated recently, so if you haven’t checked the others for a while (like Duy’s or Ray’s or Ching’s or Christa’s1), go ahead, they’ve been updated :)

Firstly, I’m listening once again to OCREmix tracks, Tales of Symphonia music, and the Elfen Lied Intro. Here ya go, the Elfen Lied Intro for your listening pleasure (1.5 mb) – http://www.baomon.com/board/elfen-intro.mp3

Listen to it, whether or not you think you’d like the anime or not. So I’m just talking to David right now :P As I always say, even if you hate a certain anime/game/movie, it wouldn’t be fair to automatically hate the music as well. I don’t exactly say it like that, but it can be implied.

------------------- short rant ---------

Anyway, I was going to write a really short ‘rant’ entry on the morning of the 4th, the day after my most recent update. However, I woke up the next morning and I wasn’t feeling ranty, and I learned not to hold grudges anymore, and besides, I… yeah, didn’t feel ranty the night before either. It was about a conversation I had with Alan, so I was going to post it, but the conversation ended okay, so after that I didn’t feel the need to rant as much.

To summarize, it was about Selfishness. I was complaining about how Alan was selfish, when he looked at the spoilers to Tales of Symphonia. At first, it was a mistake on his part, because he believed he wouldn’t ever play Tales of Symphonia. Of course it’s a mistake, since there are the next 8 months we’ll be living together. But anyway, it’s selfish because it benefits himself and not us.

So we say he can’t play with us, because he will probably say something and ruin the story. It happens before, which is why sometimes he’s not allowed to watch anime with us (like when I show URDA to other people). Anyway, he says he’s okay if we don’t allow him to play, so he doesn’t see the problem.

See, the problem is, while he might be okay if we kick him out of the room, WE’RE not okay with it. Like, we HAVE to kick him out, and he’s okay, but us, we feel like shit when we shun someone and tell them to go away. Also, we like to spend time together as friends, and when he looks at the spoilers, and we kick him out, we don’t get to spend time with him, so we feel like crap. And that’s why it’s selfish.

Anyway, out of the argument came one good thing… well, several. First, he realizes the pain he’s causing us, and the 2nd, he says he’ll stop looking at spoilers. Not sure how accurate that promise would be, but hopefully it’ll stay. At least he hasn’t looked at FMA spoilers, since he says he actually plans on watching it.

So that’s the partial rant. Anyway, so Alan’s not allowed to play? Well, he’s allowed to now! Several events that happened recently comes to this conclusion. First and foremost…

------------- tales... again ------------

The other day (Saturday) we went to Jia’s house, and unfortunately Ambrose couldn’t join us, but… we beat Tales of Symphonia! Yup! Finished disc 1 in 47 hours, finished the game after another 8, so beat it at 55:25. Of course, we were in “Rush mode”. Simply, since Jia was leaving soon, and we would only get to play with him once every several weeks, we wanted to get as much “story” done as possible; in other words, not as much treasure hunting or sidequests. Thus, Disc 2 didn’t have too much story… it’s like Disc 3 in FF7, which has a lot of sidequests and subquests, and probably not too much left to the story.

Okay, Disc 2 does have some story. So don’t get disappointed, Wen and Jason, when you finish Disc 1 :P Anyway, long story short, we beat Tales of Symphonia. So for the most part, Alan can’t spoil things for us anymore. But, there’s more!

On Sunday, we had friends over again! (However, today, Monday, we spent most of the day doing house chores, Boo-urns, but yeah.) So, Jia came over, and eventually at night David came over. So, we were done Tales, and now onto Sidequests! Anyway, the night before, I did a bit of GameFAQing. We were done the game, so… we can do a bit of faqing. Besides, remember that 1111, 1112, thing that I mentioned before? I sooo did not want to do that, so I had to check the faqs. I checked stuff about Ex-skills, Techs, Unison attacks, etc… and then my fingers and eyes wandered, and I checked out some secret stuff too.

Anyway, the secret stuff is hard to find!! At least, some of it was… it would’ve been really hard to find it on our own, so we did faq it. Eventually we faqed a lot of the secrets, but there are still some we didn’t. Thus, even more so, Alan can’t tell us anything new that we haven’t found out yet. So that means he can definitely play with us in the fall! Well… maybe.

See, the reason we didn’t want Alan to play with us, Duy and I, is that so he won’t accidentally open his mouth and tell us something, or even a body gesture which could hint at something and thus ruin the game. Now, there’s Wen and Jason playing, so Alan could affect the gameplay for them rather than for us. So it’s up to Wen and Jason, but I’m sure they’re more forgiving and they’ll allow Alan to play as long as he doesn’t spoil anything. As I said, it’s a painful thing to kick someone out of a group, so they’ll let him play.

So, there will be 3 of them, and 2 of us, Duy and I. That’s okay, I don’t need to play all the time, so maybe I’ll just switch in sometimes with Duy or with Alan or whatever. Wen and Jason should be there most of the times though, since they don’t know the story, and missing stuff could get confusing; or rather, the story stays better if you’re there all the time. This can be said about anything, really.

Anyway, when we beat the game, we got a harder difficulty, and new game plus. For Wen and Jason, I suggest they play… not the harder difficulty. Also, we can make several new games, one for us and one for Wen and Jason. See, with new game plus you can *buy* special features, like “earn 2x experience” or “start with all magic spells that you had at the end of the previous game”.

For Wen and Jason, they won’t start with ‘all magic spells’ or ‘2x experience’, but some of the less game-altering features. For our game, Duy and I, we’ll play the harder difficulty, (I think?) and we’ll start with some of the cool features. So for Wen and Jason, they’ll go through the same things we’ve experienced. Story, shocking plot twists, having to level and struggle with bosses if under-leveled. They’ll feel good when they beat a hard boss, feel excited when learning new spells or achieving new titles, finding new weapons and accessories that increase different numbers in the status screen, and lots more. Some of these things you can’t experience with a ‘cool’ new game plus.

For the Wen Jason Alan game, and probably Duy, I suggest Duy isn’t the first player, and he’s not Lloyd either. Someone else can take charge and be the leader, and the first player (First player controls movement in map/dungeon/towns/etc, and has the camera focused on them during battle). As for S-type and T-type, I guess the players can do that. We shouldn’t force them to see what the other spells are… we can do that in our game.

Anyway, that’s enough about Tales for now. Ray probably doesn’t read too much about Tales, does he? Anyway, if you want to read more about it, check out Duy’s journal. The last 3 entries have been Tales-heavy, and now that we beat it (but not 100% yet), he will probably slow down his entries again…

-------------- other stuff ---------------

Unfortunately, Ray, there’s not much else to this entry. Well, here are the pictures you wanted! I thought the good resolution will take care of stuff, but unfortunately the blurriness and lighting kinda suck so… it’s not really helpful. Anyway, here they are. I doubt anyone else would care to look, but your curiosity would make you look anyway. (just look at the file name! Your mind compels you!)

As for the actual hands-on experience, Duy did it instead, since he had a glass of milk at his disposal. Ask him for the report.

In terms of anime, FMA 47 RAW and ELFEN 7 RAW are out, so I’m still waiting. The other day I saw Dear S 1, a fanservicey version of Chobits. Well, the Chobits basis at least, guy finds girl who doesn’t speak English and must take care of her, and yeah, she’s pretty naked sometimes. PG fanservice, not NC17 fanservice, but yeah.

I also saw Naruto 98. Okay, I saw Naruto 1-6, 72, and 98 now. Since I am currently loving FMA, a >26 ep series, I have to be open about >26 ep series, and not just say that Naruto is mass produced like DBZ, Pokemon and Sailor moon, so that it’s not so good. Anyway, Naruto’s pretty good. Since I haven’t seen too many eps, the characters aren’t as strong for me (no char development for me), but I suppose there’s story and all that (again, I haven’t seen enough in a row for me to see the change from episode to episode). Maybe I should watch naruto, at least the first 35 or so that I have burnt on dvd…

As for my foot, it’s good now :) If I took better care of it, it would be perfect right now, but it’s okay. It’s slowly healing, but I could help it, but I haven’t done it for a while. But it’ll disappear by itself.

------------- David and SSBM -------------

David’s learning SSBM! Well, that started a while ago. It’s funny though, since he played SSB a lot, I figured he would be better with SSBM by now, but he still falls into pits a lot. Also, I’d think he’d do better in SSBM… in SSB, you kill easy, you die easy. In SSBM, it takes more to kill, and you live longer (so much more defense, so much less… well, offense). But while David’s improving, he’s still not doing so well.

Of course, that’s partially because he’s using Roy. Haha. See, we teach newbies to use Roy so they can see that smashes are powerful, and that recovery requires stuff other than Up+B. However, if you wanna teach about tilt attacks, throws and other stuff, Roy’s not the right character. And Dancing Blade and Counter aren’t easy to teach either. As a user of Fox, maybe David should try Fox, although his mass speed makes him… interesting to use.

So, David’s still struggling with SSBM, and he’s not really in the ‘fun’ mood of it yet. As I said, he’s still struggling, so I don’t think he’s having fun yet. He doesn’t talk while playing (other than asking questions)… he hasn’t used anything from the SSBM term list! So while Duy, Jia, and myself are FROMWHEREing and YOUWINTHISROUNDing and AIYAHHHing and 20BEATSYOUR5ing, David’s just sitting there, quietly observing his Roy fall off a cliff.

Oh well. So that’s my public report on David’s progress. Not sure if I should make it public, but then again, it’s my blog, and I felt like talking about it. Maybe David will talk about his SSBM experiences in his blog, but maybe not.

----------- TV etc -------------

Anyway, I just came back from dinner a while ago. Spike TV has started their CSI Marathon. It’s funny, using Rogers Digital Cable Guide/Info function, press Info and hit right a bunch of times, and you’ll see CSI: Crime Scene Investigation from 7:00-8:00, 8-9, etc till 2am – 3am, then nothing from 3-9 am, and then again from 9am-10 am, etc… CSI, all day, every day, for the rest of the week, and then CSI twice every weekday. I’ve seen a lot of CSI already, but I could rewatch some episodes, especially early Season 1 episodes. If you’re Alan, I suggest you watch these :)

Speaking of which, CSI caused me to shed a tear today. I don’t know why I blog about that, when something makes me shed a tear… maybe I just mention it to show that a scene is powerful, and bring attention to it. Of course, I didn’t watch much of the 7:00-8:00 episode today.

At 7:20, I was watching Wheel of Fortune, and as the contestant spun the bonus wheel, Pat Sajak said “go ahead, spin the wheel, this is the only time you get to do it. If you were on Jeopardy, you could do this over and over until you have grandkids, but not here!”

And then of course, at 7:30-8:00, we watched Jeopardy. Ken Jennings is back, but today’s episode wasn’t as spectacular as always. He even got the final jeopardy wrong (and it was about Comic Books, one of his better subjects), and he bet the common “over-winner” amount. That is, if he lost, he would have 1 more dollar than if the 2nd place guy risked all and won.

Anyway, that’s about it. It’s 9:00 now, so I’m watching CSI again, ugh, I hope I don’t get tired of it. At 10:00, maybe I’ll watch a new episode of CSI Miami, if the season starts now. So now there’s CSI on Spike TV every week day, twice, and then a new episode of CSI Miami every week, a new episode of CSI Las Vegas every week, and CSI New York premiering soon, so a new episode every week? OMGWTFBBQ! How can I go wrong?

Anyway, tomorrow is Tuesday, and in the morning I think I’ll be going to Futureshop. Did you see the FS Labour weekend flyer? Memorex, 50 DVD+Rs or –Rs, $24.99!! That’s CRAZY! Too bad Ray isn’t in town, although maybe he already got it. And now Ray’s living with some random people? That sure sucks, eh? Anyway, I'll buy both +R's and -R's. I like +R's, but maybe +R's don't work on Alan's computer but -R's do. So we'll see. And I could always use more dvds, haha.

Hey Alan, wanna go to Waterloo Wednesday night? I don’t think I’m busy, but maybe my parents are, so I wouldn’t mind coming with you. I’ll bring some boxes of stuff, so I don’t have to carry as much when we move in for real. Anyway, I tried messaging all the time today, but apparently you’re not there, and your msn’s going crazy with being online and offline periodically. Fix that :P

(edit: 9:24 – alan’s online now, whee. But yeah.)

And that’s it! Or…

------ SSBM TIP OF THE DAY ---------------

SSBM Tip of the day: You are the most important person

David says he gets ‘disoriented’ during 4-player FFA games. 4 Characters, a lot to look at, it’s understandable – then again, there’s SSB – but that’s pretty slow, the characters are very see-able (like, DK is 2 rectangular polygons with limbs), and characters and backgrounds are very contrasted. In SSBM, as graphics get more… photorealistic? People look more real, backgrounds are more detailed, people are more detailed, so things tend to start blending in. And it’s faster.

So, David asks, “what do you focus on in a 4-player FFA?” Speaking of which, maybe I’ll update the SSB page I made… but maybe not. Anyway, as my tip says, the most important person to focus on is yourself. Notice where you are, in relationship to the level. Always notice how much damage you are at. If you are at high damage, you may not want to stand so close at the edge, or you may want to cower more. If you are at lower damage or more lives remaining, you can try to be more experimental or be more aggressive.

The next things you look at are your surroundings. At first, and with Roy, you should notice the people right around you. In other words, your targets. Roy can’t usually do much against people far away, and since you (David) are just starting out, it might be too much trouble to look far away to see Samus charging a plasma ball, or seeing Captain Falcon lift off the ground. So, for Roy, you notice your targets and dodge targets. See who you can hit and who can hit you.

We can talk about this for ages, and a lot more strategies. For example, if Roy sees all 3 guys near the edge, fighting each other, Roy can walk up and ‘break up’ the fight. But that’s strategy now, and strays away from my tip of the day, although, if you see something like this, you can take advantage of it.

So, to summarize, you look at yourself, you know all about yourself (damage), and you look at the closer opponents. Of course, it’s somewhat distracting, so you know a little bit about the others and where they are, because they can enter your vision range at any time. And as I said, you might get hit by a plasma ball or a captain falcon if you don’t see it coming. Eventually as you get better, you’ll become master of your domain, and you see what everyone is doing, at all times.

Wait, that’s not true. If you’re in deep combat with someone else, you can’t pay attention to the others. I know this is true for myself, say, when we’re on peach’s castle, and the 2 left people duel each other and the 2 right people duel. If I’m on the left, I would have no idea about what’s happening on the right whilst I’m dueling that other guy. So if you’re in deep combat with someone, you can’t pay attention things other than yourself, your damage, your opponent, and maybe his/her damage.

I guess it’s important to see different things while recovering. First, you see yourself, and try to recover. Then you see your edge guarders, or other opponents, and react accordingly.

Entry’s getting long!
So, I think it’s time to end it. SSB tip’s also getting long. Hope you enjoyed reading. Hope you liked or at least downloaded the elfen lied intro.
