Dragon Farming

Alternate titles of this entry are “Symphonia, Disc 2, 50:15 done” or “1111 – Lois? Damn! 1112 – Lois? Damn!”

So, long story short, this update is based around Tales of Symphonia. By now, most of you have seen the game being played, or played some of it, so you know what it’s like and stuff.

(currently listening to various Symphonia tracks, as well as Elfen Lied intro, and then various OCRemix tracks as well)

Anyway, despite what some of you may have heard (or read, in the case of Alan), the story in Tales of Symphonia’s pretty awesome. At first it feels a bit generic, but it’s building up and I like it. Characters are good too, and they add to the story, so etc etc, it’s a good story. I shouldn’t talk about what’s happening in the game thus far, because… well, it’ll be a bunch of spoilers, right? And nobody, except Alan, wants that!

Now, a little sidestep while talking about Symphonia. We’ve played about 50:15 now, and just got to disc 2 a few hours ago. So, the game’s pretty long. Duy says we’re overleveled, but I disagree; I don’t think we’ve spent that much time being lost and fighting enemies. Maybe a little higher-leveled than expected, but nowhere near the point where the game gets really, really easy.

Ambrose has been playing with us for, umm, at least, 20 hours? And Jia has been playing with us for maybe, at least 40 hours. Anyway, Ambrose said he might get the game himself, and I don’t think he cares if we play without him, but Jia is a different story. I think Jia would really prefer to play with us, and not let us get past the point where we are now, at least, not with this file. So we can probably play every few weekends, whenever we come home and we get Jia to come home too. Anyway, Duy doesn’t like the idea of having to wait so long between games; he really likes the game! I do too.

So, this is what we propose: In the fall, we start a new game with Jason and/or Wen. That’s it. We’ll start a new game, and this time we’ll probably use different characters. Duy’s been using Lloyd 50% of the time, Sheena 40% of the time, and some other characters here and there. I’ve used Kratos 30% of the time, and then I switched over to Colette and Regal for a few hours, and then switched to Presea (with Lachlan’s recommendation), which I’ve played for 60% of the time now. Or something like that. Anyway, now I’ll probably try playing as someone different, and someone other than Duy can be 1st player and Lloyd.

Another idea is that we can all try melee characters. On several occasions, you have to split the 6/8 characters into 2 teams, and once we tried one team entirely of melee characters, and that was pretty fun. So we could try that too. Also, I would alter my character’s playing magic techs with Tech or Strike.

The other day, while playing Tales, we found a new battle mechanic that can totally change what spells we have. Well, I found it, when I was playing as Presea and I accidentally dipped into T-type with all my T-type Ex Gems. So, there are 2, say, alignments, T-type (Technical) and S-type (Strike), which determine what kind of skills your character can learn.

Sometimes (usually) though, you can’t learn both S and T types of certain spells, say, fire elemental spells. Anyway, so Lloyd has been mostly using S-type, and so were Kratos and Presea, while the mages were using T-type, so we might switch it around next time.

Anyway, so who’s up for that, in the fall? I guess Alan can play too, but then that’s too many people. And Alan already knows the story since he faqed it, so it’s not as enjoyable for him most likely, and would be better if Jason and Wen played. I’m not sure what Wen and Jason’s timetables look like yet, so I’m not sure how often we can get together for Tales sessions, but we should be able to finish Disc 1 this term.

And everyone’s always in the mood for another good RPG, with a good story and a fun game. So that’s good, so it’ll be fun. Anyway, back to my semi-Symphonia update.

So, the game’s good! It’s fun, and the battles aren’t repetitive, per sé, and it’s not a button masher. And the characters are indeed, customizable. I mean, there’s the characters in FF4, where there isn’t a lot of customization; each character is distinct from one another, which is good, but there are no relics or anything. Then there’s FF7, where each character is fully customizable with different material, and thus, other than limit breaks, each character is… the same?

So this game is in the middle, like FF6, which has relics. This game too, has relics, like, you can equip 2 accessories which give you different abilities, like upped defense, or upped HP, or ½ magic consumption, or resistance to fire, and various generic things like that.

And then, there’s the Ex Gems. Each character has slots for 4 exgems, and ex gems come in 4 levels. At first you have no ex gems, and as you progress through the game you acquire the higher level gems. Ex Gems give your character abilities, some generic, some personal to each character. So there’s stuff like upped strength, or up hp, and then things like “your character moves faster in towns” or “when your character talks to females in towns, you get items”.

And then there’s Ex Gem combinations. For example, if you have a level 1 xgem “Strong” and a level 2 xgem “Personal”, after a battle, you’ll discover a compound xgem skill, which is a skill that you permanently get, as long as your #1 xgem is “Strong” and level 2 xgem is “Personal” – for example, you might get “Critical up”, higher chance for critical attack.

In most cases, a character would probably be best to fill up the 4 slots with x gems of different levels. Some compound skills require more than 2 xgems, so some require all 4 to be a certain thing. The 2nd alternative title for this update is about that.

I have Presea, with 4 different xgems, of 4 different levels. To discover all compound skills I can have with Presea, I would have to go through 4x4x4x4, or 256 different combinations, so 256 different battles to find them all out. That’s really, really bad, so that… well, sucks. So, there’s a lot of different customizations, so… yeah.

As for the title of this update, it’s called Dragon Farming. For those not familiar, Farming means to… like, let’s say you’re playing a game (Metroid for example), and you’re low on life. You enter a room, and there’s a few easy enemies, and you kill them, and gain back life. You would then exit the room, come back in, so the enemies respawn, so you can fight those easy enemies again and gain back life again. This is the process of farming. You farm the enemies, which are easy, and you reap the crop rewards, which is life.

In the case of dragon farming, there’s a room with a dragon, and you can come back and forth and the dragon will respawn. The Dragon gives off a lot of money, so that’s our reward. The Dragon was also useful for other things, such as reaching new max combos, so the dragon was pretty helpful.

Anyway, back to the game. It’s not linear, but sometimes it gets confusing. But other times, they tell you where you should go next, so in that sense it is linear, but that doesn’t prevent you from going to other places. Well, sometimes it does. But sometimes linearity is important… anyway, it’s not linear, but it sure can get confusing.

Dungeons. Do you like puzzles? Of course you do… but every now and then puzzles can get annoying. Partially because they can get long and tedious, partially sometimes you just want to continue on the story line, or you just want to get into the next boss battle as soon as possible.

So there are a lot of puzzles. Some are the long and tedious kind, involving pushing blocks around, some are harder with weird switches and mazes. There’s also the regular RPG or adventure game element in some dungeons, of going around, retrieving a blue key card, which gives you access to blue doors, and then you find the green and eventually red, and then you can get to the boss room.

Anyway, without the puzzles, dungeons might actually be really fast. Since enemies aren’t random battles, you can see them on the map, and thus 80% of the time, you can avoid them if you like. Every now and then there’s a tight passage with an enemy, so it’s harder to bypass, but for the most part, battles are optional.

Z-Optional stories – you’ve probably seen them. We walk around, and suddenly in the bottom left corner there’s the option to watch an optional dialogue between some of the party members. These are pretty good; some for story, some for character development, and many for humour. Anyway, Duy already mentioned a good paragraph about it, so check his blog for more. (2 updates in 10 days? Wow :P)

That ends the Tales of Symphonia portion. So in the fall, we’ll start a new game with Jason and Wen, and on several weekends, we’ll go back and play with Jia.

----------------------------------------- Other stuff ------------------

As for other news… well, I said that we’d do the friends thing on Thursday, but we… well, we didn’t exactly do that. So, last weekend was the 60 hour event, and before that was other stuff. To recap, after Cancun, Jia was here from Sunday till Monday evening, and then I saw him again Tuesday night at AVP. On Friday started the 60 hour event, so saw Jia at noon, and he stayed until Sunday night, so he did stay for about 58 hours.

Jia then came over on Tuesday again, and left Wednesday night; Brose was here too, and we had a bbq with some relatives. The next day, Thursday, we went to Ambrose’s, and then came home for dinner, and then left for Ambrose’s again and stayed until Friday morning.

So… Jia has been out of his house for quite a few days this week. Hehe. Just an observation. Anyway, back to the relatives, there was my uncle and his wife, from Australia, and eventually there was my mom’s niece and her husband, from France. The husband’s name was, I think, Ug. Or Ugen.

Anyway, we played a bunch of Symphonia with Ambrose and Jia… and some melee here and there, and that basically sums it up. I made Ambrose some DVDs, but I don’t think they worked on his computer, as they don’t work on Alan’s computer, but work fine with Jason’s. Maybe I should investigate this, and see if it’s a problem on my end or their end… so unfortunately, I don’t think Ambrose will be able to enjoy FMA this term…

I remembered something that I should’ve posted in the last update… it involves a funny pushing of a mattress, but it’s not really funny for words. It’s a “you had to be there” moment. Or you “had to be me, or had to be Duy” kinda moment. I laughed for a whole minute, gasping for air, it was hilarious.

Oh yeah, at Choy’s house, when it was time for bed, Jia wanted to put on a movie. We felt like watching Mortal Kombat 1 for some reason, but Choy didn’t have it, and Fantasia was on VHS and we didn’t have a VCR in the basement, so Jia looked through Choy’s dvd collection, and saw a movie named Beowulf. I’ve heard of this, or at least I’ve heard the name, but I haven’t seen it. Jia hasn’t either, and nor has Ambrose, so we decide to stick it in. If it’s old, we can probably make fun of it, and maybe it was good, like a hidden gem. Anyway, we were too tired to actually make fun of it.

The movie was pretty terrible. Starring Christopher Lambert, IMDB rating of 3.7, it was pretty crappy indeed. Rhona Mitra’s also in there, she’s not too famous, but I guess she was the sex appeal in the movie, since her breasts were pretty much hanging out all the time. Anyway, the movie was pretty bad. Don’t watch it. It’s not like, “it’s so bad like Giglii, so I wanna see it to see how bad it is”, it’s just bad, like a bad movie. :P

---------- more other stuff ------------------------------

Saw Elfen Lied episode 6. Now this was a great episode; lots of story, lots of new questions, it’s like a perfect episode. If somehow David was forced to watch Elfen Lied, this would be his favourite episode thus far. Haha. Anyway, it was a great episode, and I’m looking forward for more.

I guess I should call the poker chips thing. I dislike them… and maybe I’m just trying to avoid bad news or something, which is why I haven’t called them. I’m postponing the inevitable, but oh well. I’ll call them on Monday… I usually call earlier in the week, since there’s more mail on Mondays. Anyway, I’m pretty much consistent with one poker chip trick now, yay. Practice makes perfect. Now if only I can do the shuffling…

Hey Ray! You’re not online! Anyway, we got our protein powder, and we asked about the different proteins you asked about. Anyway, Cindy, our trainer said that out of the 3 you mentioned, she doesn’t know AST VP2, and that the GNC Whey Isoburst is probably closest to what she’s giving us. Is the GNC one expensive? She said it probably is, unless you have a membership, so it’s a bit cheaper. I’m don’t think she said much about the Synthrax Nectar… I think she said that she knows some people that tried it, and then returned it for better stuff.

Anyway, she gave us “Pharmaceutical Grade”… whey isolate I think. Unfortunately, I don’t think we can have friends tomorrow, unless maybe very late, so I’m not sure if you can try some within the next few days. Maybe you’re already in Hamilton… anyway, we got 5 lbs of Vanilla, and 5lbs of Chocolate, so after taxes and whatever, it was about $140. Now that we bought the stuff, I guess we’d better use it, eh?

Magic is coming out with new stuff, yay… well, they always do. Wanna get back into Magic? ;) Haha. Alan and I will probably start, or at least we’ll have some fun tournaments here and there, organized by the sci-fi club, as it says in Alan’s blog. Champions of Kamigawa sounds fun…

Anyway, today the French couple left, and so for lunch we went to Red Lobster as a last meal. Anyway, dinner portions were expensive, so we had some lunch portions. I wasn’t really satisfied with my option, the Outer Banks Sample. A Captain’s Catch would’ve been much better… that’s what Duy and mom had… I also kinda wanted to try the Roasted Salmon in a bag, but I was afraid it might be too spicy… yaddayaddayadda… had a pina colada ;) Anyway, the meal wasn’t too bad. Wasn’t too expensive, since we had cheaper stuff than usual.

Yesterday I had a driving lesson! It went pretty well! The guy said I learned a lot of stuff within the 90 minutes, and I was getting it really quickly. I’m kinda glad, but maybe I didn’t learn too much new stuff, if I was doing so well already? But oh well. I have another lesson on the 11th, and then the test on the 16th. The 11th is the Saturday before school starts, so we’ll probably move to Waterloo on the 11th. The 16th is the Thursday after, and I have no classes on Thursdays, so parents will probably pick me up Wednesday night and return me Thursday evening.

Hopefully I get my g2 now… and then I have 11 months to get my G… wheee… anyway, here’s a crazy idea. Remember last reading week, since we had only reading days, David and etc came to visit? Well, if David doesn’t have classes on Fridays, maybe he can come with me back to Waterloo Thursday evening, and then, I’m assuming we’re going back to ‘Sauga Friday evening or Saturday morning. So David can come check out Waterloo again, if he likes, but whatever. He probably has classes that day, but the idea came up anyway.

So to recap, we’ve had friends all this week, so maybe we can’t do anything tomorrow. Not sure yet… we most likely can’t, unless say, in the afternoon, my parents decide we’re not doing anything, so we suggest we go to someone’s house, since it’s more ‘productive’ than doing nothing. So maybe that’ll work, not sure, but we’ll see.

Over and out.

Wait, one more thing. Two more things. Spike TV announces that in the fall, every weekday, they’ll air 2 back-to-back episodes of CSI, at 7pm. That’s pretty cool, eh? I think it is. It’s neat indeed. And next week, I think they’re having a CSI marathon, featuring a bunch of episodes from CSI seasons 1-4, for maybe a few days, only CSI on Spike TV. Now that’s crazy.

Oh wait… starting Monday (next week), Jeopardy will continue, and Ken Jennings will be back. So maybe I can’t watch CSI and Jeopardy at the same time… oh well. Oh yeah, we’ll have TV in the fall, I really think we will. I really want it. So yeah, we’ll get it.

So look forward to another bunch of Ken Jennings episodes. As well, when I get back to the Loo, we’ll go to harveys to try the new Salmon burger. And then on Wednesday, we’re going to Molly Blooms.

(MSWord, Times new Roman, 12 size, 6th page, 6.7” down, 3047 words, 16439 characters including spaces) (actually, a bit more than that, like this text and some other headings and stuff... never mind)

Over and out.
