Freaky Shrek Friday 2 - wednesday update 2 of 2
Ahh, darn. The original title of this post was Freaky Shrek Friday 2, SuperLink and MasterForce - which sounds pretty cool. Anyway, this is wednesday update 2 of 2, since the first one is about stuff I did, and this one has reviews on two movies... so I doubt this update 2 of 2 is too long. So, here, I'm reviewing the movies Freaky Friday and Shrek 2.
---------------------- FREAKY FRIDAY ------------
The first movie is Freaky Friday, the 2003 remake, starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan. First, I have to get this out of the way - I think Lindsay Lohan's pretty hot. She's cute ;)
Anyway, so it was on TMN, started at 12:55, so during lunch, and finished at 2:30. Duy and I were watching it, and my mom joined in about half an hour in. I started watching because I wanted to see the movie, I think Duy was there just because. It was lunch time, eating, nothing to do, so stay in the room and watch what Bao's watching.
Anyway, it turns out to be a really good movie! Well, it looks like the type of movie that Toronto Star gives 2 stars (unless it's really well done, in which case 3 stars), and IMDB gave it 7.0/10. Anyway, it was really good, and Duy enjoyed it as well. It's rare that Duy likes this type of movie, or any movie at all, so I told Duy to blog about it but he hasn't...
Anyway, as a synopsis, the movie starts out showing the disfunctional relationship between the mother and the teenage daughter. So there's the family of those 2, the younger brother, the grandpa visiting and the fiancé. This goes on for about 20 minutes, just to show the level of disfunctionality. The real movie starts when 'somehow' the mom and the daughter trade bodies.
That's when the fun starts. When you compare Lohan's character and Curtis's character from the first 20 minutes to now, it's quite hilarious. It's a total change, and for a while, that's really funny. For a really long while. Of course, towards the very ending, there's the typical fairytale disney moral ending, but that's expected.
So overall, it's a really great feel good movie. It helps if you like Lindsay Lohan :P haha. She acts pretty well in this - not in the first 20 minutes, when she's like a typical teenager in a typical teenager's body, but it's so magically different after that. It's so funny too.
Jamie Lee Curtis... I guess she did a good job too, but I wasn't focusing on her too much :P Anyway, so I recommend this movie.
--------------- SHREK 2 -------------
The second movie I'm reviewing is Shrek 2. Came out in theatres this summer, I wanted to watch it but didn't have the opportunity, so Ray got it, and then my uncle got it too and now it's on my computer. Quality isn't as good as movie theatre, and the movie theatre experience isn't quite there, but at least I watched it on the tv rather than on my computer monitor.
Because of this decrease in quality, it was less enjoyable - but I tried to look past that, and see why everyone loves it so much, why it's better than the first one, and why ray likes it so much.
Well... yes, it is good. It's great. I like the fairy godmother idea :P Anyway, didn't care much for the first few minutes, dunno why, sometimes that happens to me. Eventually the story got on its way, and stuff started happening, so it was fun.
It's a pretty colourful movie. Pretty good cast of characters, etc... there's not much I want to say, without spoiling it too much. It's not really hard to try to convince someone to like Shrek 2... it's a funfilled adventure, has similar themes with the first one, etc... not sure if I'd say it's better than the first one. Actually, I don't remember the first one too well, but... wait, yeah I do. The 2nd one is more colourful, and more stuff happens.
Anyway, from some reviews, they say it's a parody movie - and from some stuff in the first movie and in the commercials for the 2nd, it does seem a bit parody. Well, it's a movie on its own, with parody elements. Unfortunately, parody has some bad connotations... Weird Al is funny, yet the music never really is 'amazing'... and then there are the "Scary Movie"-type parodies which aren't well received at all.
Shrek 2 does well though. There are some parody scenes, and then there are improvised parody scenes... ehh... like, I mean, say... Mission Impossible, the famous scene where he's hanging from the ceiling and he can't touch the ground or do anything. It's a scene in the modern day with hightech technology. Shrek 2 takes place in a medieval setting, and with fairytale characters.
So, while it's not much of a spoiler, such a scene exists in Shrek 2 - but they can't use guns, or technology, and instead they have fairytale characters. So it's more like, a different rendering of that Mission Impossible scene with different characters, different methods, etc. It's kinda like how Jackie Chan uses objects in his environment to fight, and here, Dreamworks has a different environment to re-create the M:I scene in their own style.
Bad analogy? Perhaps. Anyway, Shrek 2 was a great movie as well. I recommend it.

Speaking of movies and Lindsay Lohan, maybe I should see Mean Girls. I hear it's not so great, but I can go check it out at CentralParkway at the 'cheap' theatres.. maybe I should do that... soon...
Anyways, that ends my movie reviews. Check the post below for other important news and updates. Hope you enjoyed the reviews.
