Bram's Gigli Ho Tep: The Gathering

Alright! 90 minutes till Conan. Here's another update, since Friday. First, I posted an anime trivia in the previous post, so go check it out if you haven't yet. It's pretty easy. Anyway, I haven't updated since Friday afternoon, so I have lots to type about. So in no particular order... well, actually, I'll start with random events, then I'll talk about what happened on Saturday and Sunday.

First of all, I haven't posted on my own board for a while. Anyway, I decided to pay them a visit and let them know what I've been up to, and I mentioned this blog, but not the addy. Anyway, I decided to let some of them in on the blog, so perhaps you'll see some more comments from other people in the next few days. So first, welcome Lee-anne :)

While watching CSI:Miami today, I was wondering about what David said about the show (Las Vegas, not Miami) about how he didn't like it, and then I realized I liked it for the same reasons that he didn't like it... well, not just those reasons. Anyway... I also saw a commercial, and unless I heard wrong, it said that 20% of Canadians have Herpes. Isn't that like, a lot?

On Friday, Gigli premiered on TMN. Well, now I can watch the horrible movie for free instead of renting it, so now I can see what all the anti-hype was about it. I taped it, so if anyone else wants to see it, just ask.

Anyway, I watched the first 46 minutes of Gigli, just to sample it, and then I went downstairs and did something else. I wanted to wait till a good #, like 20 minutes, or 30, or 40, or 45, but stuff just kept happening so I decided to stop at 46. So... a mini-review of the first 46 minutes:

The first 30 minutes were livable. Watchable. Maybe it's just that it didn't bore me in the first 30 minutes, maybe I can tolerate more things... well, that's true, I can tolerate more things, such as anime and stuff... Anyway, so nothing really amazing or bad happens in the first 30 minutes. Jennifer Lopez is pretty hot - maybe not as hot as everyone says, but she's not bad. She makes the movie not as bad :P

Between minutes 30 and 36, Christopher Walken makes an appearance. He's cool, except he bored me to hell, until he started talking about pie, which he does for 30 seconds, and that was pretty funny. Then it got boring for a while, then haaalf interesting between 42 and 45, and then I stopped at 46.

So far, the movie's not overall offensive, there's a lot of swearing though. It's a pretty boring movie, so far... maybe not the worst, but I can see why some say it is bad. Having seen only 46 minutes, not even half, I can't judge the action/romance/comedy too well. Not really funny, not really dramatic/etc/romantic yet.

Will David like it? Well, after the True Lies incident, I decided I wouldn't really give opinions like that anymore, so he'll just have to endure it himself to figure that out.

Megaman Collection comes out tomorrow. Yay! Wheee. Just thought I'd mention that. I also like cherries. We have this awesome cherry strudel thing, it's awesome.

I've been playing more Settlers with Vinks, and I lost 4 of the last 6 games... >_< ahhh... Dice haven't been in my favour, I'd say, and he's getting somewhat ninjalicious with starting spots.

Anyway, now onto Saturday and some of Sunday. Saturday was duy's friend, Mike Jones's's, 19th birthday party at his house in Hamilton. I forget what happened Saturday morning - Go Train + Go bus ride were all fine, nothing particularly special. Got to the Hamilton station, Mike and his mom came to pick us up, and next thing I know we were at his house.

Step into his basement, and all the other guests (7 others) were there already. He also has some siblings, and a dog, Max. I think I have animal affinity, cuz Max really liked me. Anyway, the gamecube was off, and all of them were playing Magic the Gathering.

Party of nerds. No offense :P Nerds of all kind. Shy nerds, technie nerds, punk nerds, drinking nerds, loudmouth nerds, each familiar with Magic, d&d, and videogames. It's like entering a different dimension, a bit nerdier than our current situation. Typical stereotype of a gathering of nerds in some small basement room.

Anyway, so there were... I forget their names... damn... let's call them Mike, Bao, Duy, Raoul, Abiz, JR, Rick, Owen, Tentin, and ... Clay. Or CLON was his smash name, so I'll call him Clon. You may remember... I think, Mike, JR, and Owen and maybe some other guy from the Magic Draft that we had. I'll pretend that was them.

so first, Mike, Duy, and myself played a few rounds of Smash Melee, and then the others were done their magic game, so we decided to have a 10-player game. And there was a bright idea to make the game a bit longer, so they set everyone's life to 40 instead of 20. Anyway, playing with the group, I noticed their immaturity... such childish name calling and petty fights... I'm old and maturer now... can't be associated with these teenagers... hehe. Anyway...

If you don't want to read about Magic, just skip the next few paragraphs. Alan, and some other people, read on :) (I don't think there's any 5th dawn spoilers, maybe one or two things, so don't worry)

so I used the draft deck from the first draft, a bit modified. At the start I was doing well, bringing out a few elves and mana-producing creatures, but I didn't have any big creatures in my hand except the medium-sized umm... Beast.. Mugalodon... thing... Anyway, things were doing okay until Duy brought out on Aether Flash, so nobody else could really summon anything, except I who summoned the 3/3 Beast.

I had a small-creature clump or something, so I kept picking up small creatures and couldn't play them. Well, small creatures and mana, whoopie. So I had lots of mana, couldn't summon anything. Eventually Abiz plays something that deals 2 damage to everything, so all my creatures die except the Vine Trellis and the beast.

All of a sudden I stop drawing mana, and just then Raoul (who's using Mike's black deck) brings out Desolate Angel, which destroys all land in play. So all my land is drawn, and now I get a big creature clump. Big creatures, NO mana, for maybe 10 turns.

Eventually, Abiz plays something which returns all green permanents to their owner's hands, so then I had absolutely no permanents in play. Eventually I get a forest, and eventually Duy dies because everyone hated his aether flash. Oh, and a while ago, like, by turn 7, Raoul pissed of Rick and so Rick dropped out of the game.

So then I get some forests and someone removes the top 3 cards of my library, and with that I lose a guy, and 2 forests... grr... Around this time, Owen was pretty manascrewed too, having some white soldiers and 2 morphed dudes on his table.

Eventually I started doing pretty good. Brought out Wirewood Guardian, that Huurdoog 4/7 guy, an Acient Ooze (which was countered), and some other stuff. And then, JR played that GGG5 thing that makes everyone's life equal to the number of creatures they controlled. Everyone went down to 2-6 life, except Raoul, which was at 8 or so.

Raoul had flying guys, so he just killed everyone... including a nice Syphon Life thing, which reduced the rest more and brought him back to living. So ended in the final 4, that was an interesting game.

------

Anyway, (we're done talking about Magic... for now) - so afterwards, we get into a Smash Melee tournament. We used that tournament feature, inputted us 10 into the tournament with 2 other computer players. Long story short, the final 3 looked just like how it was 4 hours ago when Mike, Duy, and myself were playing. So Duy won the tournament. Meanwhile, we were also having pizza, I think from 3-4-1. It was alright. I had 4 generous slices...

Hmm... so dinner was around 6:30... I think we just played a lot of smash for a bit more. Some 2.0 Super sudden death kinda stuff, that lasted a while. 'Twas fun. Anyway, let's fast forward to... before 8, when we all walked to Rogers Video in search of something to rent.

The walk was interesting. Okay, it wasn't really, but there was talk of harassing old ladies and stuff. Whether they meant it or not, I'm not sure - but I guess we were nerds of all sorts, some of which like to cause trouble and run into signs. Anyway, so we get to Rogers. Long story very short, we rent Bram Stoker's Dracula (Keanu Reeves, Winona Ryder, Anthony Hopkins, etc) and Bubba Ho Tep (uhh... Bruce something and some other guy). Then some of the others went to buy some booze, us others went straight home. Took a detour, Raoul took some guy's garbage, and then we got back home and tried to lock the others out of the house. But parents were home, so we couldn't lock them out.

8:00, had some cake, people drank some booze... wel, not really. They had a few beers, Raoul and Rick had some Vex's. Cake was pretty sweet, but oh well. A few minutes later, we started watching Bubba Ho Tep. Supposedly a good movie, recommended by Abiz who saw the first half, said it was like a parody of a B-movie, like Army of Darkness. 7.8 on IMDB, it's punchline-tag involves Elvis and a black JFK joining together to fight mummies.

Well... first of all, Duy didn't like the movie. As for me, being more tolerant... well, punch-line is a bit misleading. The movie is about 95 minutes long, and the punchline describes some of the last 20 minutes. Before all that was weird, with weird b-movie like scenes and music, with weird flash-backs or hallucination effects. Some funny, some weird. I would say it's a weird movie. Someone like Wen would probably tolerate it, perhaps like it. The funny action sequence at the end was alright.

Oh yeah, throughout the movie, well, some of it, I was playing with this ring thing... ya know those puzzles with the wood and the rope and that metal ring that you have to remove, but you just can't? Well, Mike had one, and I spent quite some time on it throughout the party. I remember being able to solve one at my friend Andrew's house, in grade 4 or so. Haven't been able to do it since... anyway...

Then it was about 9:37, and Dracula was about 126 minutes long and people were leaving at 12, so it was decided that we watch it then. Abiz left a few minutes in cuz he's seen it before, Rick and Raoul have too but they stayed. Dracula was better, and it was pretty funny with the commentary provided by JR and the others. That reminds me, I missed a joke about an umbrella, I should ask Duy about that..

So the random comments from JR were hilarious. Not so funny in a blog, more of a 'you have to be there' kinda deal. Anyway, the movie itself was okay, not bad. I'll give Bubba Ho Tep 6.2/10, and Dracula gets 7.3/10, with JR commentary it upgrades to 8.0/10. Anyway, that's another classic I can now cross off my list of famous movies that I still have to see.

At 12 then, everyone pretty much left. We played a bunch of Smash Melee, us 3 again, then played a bit of Four Swords. Also played a bit of Waverace, so we can get the final trophy in Smash Melee, but for some reason, we didn't get the trophy yet... weird.. etc, etc, etc, we get to bed at 3:30 or so.

I woke up at 7:45, and eventually again at 8. Then I played with the ring thing for another 45 minutes, then tried to wake Duy up to play more Four Swords. I also played some more Mario vs DK. eventually around 9:45 we wake Mike up, and we had some breakfast... Bread with Peanut Butter and chicken... yumm... and a tall glass of milk.

Parents called, said they'll be a bit late. Anyway, then we played more Magic. I used my deck, modified it a bit (threw in 3 Tangle Golems), and I did much better this time. No more manascrewed... etc, it was fun. Then parents came, and we went to Ikea for lunch.

It was a pretty good lunch. Swedish meatballs, Seafood salad, Salmon, etc... it was cool. I wanted a bear couch thing, but we couldn't find it and it was expensive. Etc, Ikea wasn't that interesting. But while at Mike's house, it was pretty cold in the basement, but I didn't wear a jacket, so eventually I paid for it. While in Ikea, I got really sick, sneezed a lot.

Went home, still sick. Napped, watched stuff, napped, took Neo Citran, it helped, but in the morning (Monday now) I was still a bit sick, so I didn't go to my trainer session.

Umm... so... I guess that's it? Well, that was a lot of reading. I'm not sure who actually reads this, so just post a comment so I know you've read this. Anyway, it's 12:12 now, so I spent about 72 minutes writing an update... I hope that doesn't discourage anyone to not-update after long periods of inactivity...

Anyway, gotta do the font colouring now...

So... that's the end of the update. Too long, I know... let's just say I make up for the lack of activity in other people's blogs :) Anyway, it's 12:18 now. Hmm... I've been listening to Beastie Boys - Check it out for the past 50 minutes or so. Gonna have another piece of cherry strudel, then maybe some Conan... hopefully he'll have a good guest tonight... Keira Knightley I hope...
