four 5's game - trivia - dooo it....
Okay, this came up maybe around Friday of last week - it's a game my baby bro introduced to us. Well, it's more of a trivia-type thing, but it's fun and challenging. At least, I think it's fun and challenging.
Your goal is to take four "5's" (4 occurrences of the digit "5"), and as many operations / functions / etc so that they create different numbers. You can have the digits together or separate, so you can have "55", or 0.5, or whatever. So for example, to produce "1", one of the ways is 55/55. Another is (5+5)(5-5) (10 to the power of 0). To get "2", you can have 5/5 + 5/5. To get 10, maybe 5+5+5-5. And so on. You have to use all four 5's, you can't just use 1, 2, or 3 - must use all 5's.
So the original challenge is to produce numbers 1 through 10. After that, Duy and I extended the challenge to 50. So after trying for a few days, I gave up a bit and asked for Duy's answers, and then after some more weird trial and errors, we managed to get all the numbers from 1 to 50.
This is actually indeed fun, and gets you thinking while you're not on your school terms :) Okay, so we put a few restrictions to the game to make it more fair to everyone. You may only use up to OAC/gr.12 math - so like addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, exponents, combination, permutation, fractions, decimals, and lots of other stuff I haven't told you about. But nothing past OAC, like PM340's phi functions, mobius functions, sum function, etc...
So your first challenge is to produce the numbers from 1 to 10. Your next challenge is to produce the numbers from 11-50. I recommend you do the first 10 numbers first, and then you do all the rest in any order you want.
I'm gonna tell you what numbers we got last: These numbers are:
31, 33, 37, 39, 41, 42, 44, 46, and 47. You should be able to get all other numbers without the use of a calculator, except the nine numbers listed above, which were done a bit differently. And if you want to feel good too, I'll tell you the numbers I gave up on, because I got tired of trying to solve them:
18, 21, 22, 36, 38, 43, 48. I feel stupid for some of those that I missed, especially 48. Anyway, enjoy the game... e-mail me answers if you don't want to post them here, or what not. Enjoy! Now do the game!! Dooo it!!
